- It is a wrist band (no need for a wallet) or a fob to put on keys / watchstrap / etc.
- It is a cheap wrist band (don't care about damage, etc. compared to a smart watch)
In my case, I keep the band on all the time. If I walk out without a wallet / cash (quite common, for all sorts of reason), I have a means of payment. Well worth it for my use case.
I don't like wrist bands. They are wet.- It is a cheap wrist band (don't care about damage, etc. compared to a smart watch)

bks. 100 tradespeople in 11 years - are you outfitting a cruise ship, haven't you heard of contractors?
I've hired about 10 different tradespeople in 10 years, often the same person a number of times. The system has always been get a quote from a couple, accept one of them, pay by cheque because I don't (and I suspect many people don't) keep a huge amount of cash lying around. Small job ( >£15) I'll pay by cash. Not one has suggested a reduction for cash payment. Again, must be a London thing.
No cruise ships, sadly. Refitting several commercial premises over time, setting up a commercial kitchen, etc.I've hired about 10 different tradespeople in 10 years, often the same person a number of times. Yes, probably a London thing - the same subbies aren't available. Especially in my experience the East Europeans - they've gone home with their cash by the time you want them again! I very much miss the Lake District experience of having a couple of trusted reliable firms for each trade available.
I've just gone back through my records. 100 trades wasn't right. 68 in fact. In that time, I've had (not including the "mates" who come with them):
- 7 plasterers
- 6 dry-liners
- 12 general builders
- 6 electricians (1 of them also offered the service of extra payment for less testing prior to sign-off...)
- 2 window suppliers (1 great, 1 actual contractor who asked for cash for the quoted price or a 20% uplift for a VAT receipt + FENSA cert)
- 5 general plumbers
- 2 specialist boiler installers
- 3 roofers
- 1 damp-proofing specialist
- 8 carpenters
- 3 flooring specialists
- 1 blacksmith
- 9 decorators
- 3 locksmiths / installers
Some of those came as "crews" of 4-5 people, some were solo.
Those were the general trades. On top of that, quite a few very niche specialists for specific arts- and theatre-based work. 100 is about right, of which the 65 above are the "general" trades.
In addition, I've used 8 different skip hire / waste removal firms (yes, even some of them ask for cash too - obviously no WTN offered if you accept their terms...)
Contractors - doesn't quite work in my world, sorry, have to project manage things myself with very limited-availability slots. Wouldn't it be lovely! So one has to take the people who are available for the timeslot, hence the turnover of people.
Even on a first call to a potential trade, almost without fail I will be asked "So, err, how would you like to pay for this? Would cash be ok? I can give you a great discount if so." No idea if I'm the VAT man or not - that blatant.
I put a job out on the MyBuilder site last week to see what quality of people I'd find there. A very specific and detailed spec quote for some MF ceiling work, etc. I got 3 quotes. 2 of those 3 asked for cash in return for a discount. The 3rd didn't, and was the one I hired (and who did an excellent job).
How extraordinary. There's no way anyone would want to pay cash for that lot - you'd spend your whole day nipping back and forth to the bank. I honestly haven't had a tradesman offer to do a job of work cheaper for cash since, well, I can't remember. I mean, quite apart from declaring to the person you're about to do some work for that you're a bit dodgy and willing to bend the law - don't any of these people think it might jeopardise their future employment with the same person? Geezers!!

"cash in hand" can also be "direct bank transfer to your personal account" which is something I have done in the past, £150 to a mechanic who did a load of work for me after hours, he actually asked for that so that his girlfriend didn't find a wad of money in his wallet... I've done the same for the plumber who lived over the road from me when I had a bit of an emergency, only takes a few minutes with a banking app and a one-time passcode sent in a text message, didn't even have to leave the house. Teresa May has come out in support of Uber!
To be discussed on The Jeremy Vine Show....
I don't think that she did actually, I can't quote her verbatim, but I seem to recall from the soundbite that I saw and heard on TV, that she said, "At the stroke of a pen, the Mayor has risked 40,000 jobs, (he didn't, TFL pulled their licence, not him, but he did urge TFL to take Uber's alleged wrongdoing into consideration). To be discussed on The Jeremy Vine Show....
She went on to say, "I want to see a level playing field between Private Hire, and our wonderful Black Cabs."
I don't see that as coming out in support of Uber, more like a typical politician's move, hedging her bets, and trying to retain the votes of both sides.
Although as an ex Black Cab driver myself, I had a warm glow when she bigged us up as "wonderful."

Uber have now filed an appeal with Westminster Magistrates' Court about their licence being suspended. In the meantime they are continuing their talks with TFL.
The hearing is due to take place on Dec 11th and Uber's drivers can continue to operate in London until all appeals processes are exhausted.
Business as usual.

So, according to London based Uber users most of the developed world is on the fiddle. Odd, Londoners being out of touch... .

So the news reports and press release from Uber say they filed the appeal today (13 Oct). However the licence ran out on 30 Sept. So the court should just bin it off as out of time surely. And fine the crap out of them for operating without a licence or submitted appeal for the last two weeks?
