Is anyone denying her right to say that she's offended?

I would question her motive behind contacting The Times for an article about it though. Starting conversations or aiming to get it removed from Britbox?

It's possible to point to pretty much any TV of that period and condemn it for one thing or another; even The Good Life could be accused of racism and mysogeny if you really wanted to seek offense where non was originally intended.

Why isn't there any outrage when the history channel shows world war 2 documentaries which show the horrific treatment of Jews at the hands of the Nazis?

People seem to get more offended by scripted TV shows/dramas/comedies.
Eh? What’s your point here?

Who are you thinking should be offended by a documentary on the holocaust?

I would imagine a documentary trying to say it didn’t happen would be offensive.

Do we know she approached The Times rather than them approaching her? The majority of the article is behind a paywall that I’m personally not going to pay to open.

Assuming she even did contact them with the complaint, it’s the newspaper that decided to print it and write a story around it.

I’m sure all sorts of busybodies contact papers with all manner of minor complaints. They don’t all get printed. It’s only one step up from whinging on social media and we know how prevalent that is.

I don’t think anyone is denying her right to be offended but the premise of this thread is that those that are offended should put up and shut up, whilst suggesting people should be able to say what they like. That’s somewhat of a contradiction, isn’t it? biggrin

So The Times saw something they thought people *could* in theory be angry about so they trawled the streets looking for someone who might be upset about it in order to get a quote from them.

Somewhat of a non-story in my opinion.
And it also gave The Times the opportunity to attack the BBC too.

More than likely that she contacted The Times, or rather knows someone working there. She's free to do so, but I'd question the motives behind all the parties involved.

As has been said before.... Some people are actively searching for things to be offended by and some of them might even
be using TV programmes from a bygone age to garner up 'dubios' offence.

Others with a thicker skin will see it for it is and move on.

I'm from Scotland and as is often the case with Scots have a fairly pale complexion, and have on a few occasions been
called 'Milk bottle Jock', now if I was a snowflake type I think I could take offence at that surely?, but I dont, not in the
slightest.... I laugh like f^ck. laugh

I took my 18yo (woke) daughter to 'Die Zauberflöte'. She is a singer (a wonderful sporano), loves musical theatre and likes opera.

She came out with a face like thunder. The misogyny, sexism and racism left her in a rage, even though it was written almost a quarter of a millennium ago, is an utterly beautiful masterpiece and the director had tried very hard to subvert those themes.

I think sometimes one needs to just understand that attitudes were of their time and - whilst no longer acceptable - they need to be judged by the standards of their day (if they are a pièce de résistance).

So 'Magic Flute' is not something that should be lost. On the other hand 'Mind Your Language' (which I thought was unacceptable when it aired) should disappear.

Isn't that precisely the point? Each of us has our own limits which separate the acceptable from the less so, and none of us has the right to impose our standards on others, extremism excepted of course.

The last time I saw the 1970's series "The World at War" on Yesterday freeview channel. It was heavily censored so as not to show the full extent of any violence or atrocities. It differed so much compared to the series I saw on Sunday afternoons in 1974.

Likewise Scots being tight. Had great banter with my Jewish workmates in England over who was being a miser. laugh

Britbox criticised for airing old episodes of Doctor Who that contain "racism".

Interesting one this because Britbox was set up specifically to show old UK TV and repeats for the 1970s and 1980s are bound not to meet today's PC standards.
It's mostly behind a paywall, but the quote at the top of the article was from someone, presumably of Asian origin, who suffered racial abuse while growing up saying that the use of ''s and 'Yellowface' is hard to watch for her.

Fair enough, surely? Although your use of inverted commas around the word racism implies that you believe that you should be free to all Chinese people 's' and 'Yellowfaces' if you want.

What exactly do you think that 'today's PC standards' are anyway? Mostly they seem to just ask people not to act like a towards others

Why do some seem to find that difficult?
The bit that is not hard to read is not behind the paywall.

Basically, she says she grew up in Hong Kong and for her 'it is really hard to watch because yellowface is so unacceptable now'.

Jeezus!
There are lots of things to watch I don't like. Do you know what? I don't f. watch them!
Is she being 'forced' to watch them to be 'offended'?

How f hard is that for today's generation? rolleyes
Congratulations. You've demonstrated exactly the angry and emotional response that the article was written to elicit from you.

I remember the original too, horrific viewing.

People are too busy finding offense these days in trivial stuff so even consider how bad some people really had it.

According to the article then Britbox already places warnings on programmes where language etc may not be in line with current practices. Ko could've contacted them and request a similar warning be put in place.

"On Saturday, Ko will appear on a panel at the British Film Institute with BBC presenter Samira Ahmed and Channel 4 host Kevin Fong to denounce the depiction of Asian characters in archive television"

So definitely no agenda then.

Gareth Thomas, former captain of the Welsh Rugby Union team who "came out" as gay 10 years ago, is forced to apologise for his self-deprecating (and very funny) comment on Joe Marler tweaking the bks of Alun Wyn-Jones on Saturday.

Thomas – a former Wales captain – said: “It would’ve never have happened in my day and I’m really upset about that – because if it had I would have never retired!”

I'm as guilty of being incensed by Twitter offence as anyone else but in this case I can't actually see any examples of the Tweets against Thomas.

Equity have backtracked from their condemnation of Laurence Fox after his appearance on Question Time.

So this time it appears the offended did the offending and the admission is a welcome twist.

I thought it had already been identified as a tweet from someone with access to their twitter who had an agenda?
Either way, good that they clarified it.

I really hate twitter, when I'm global dictator I'm going to ban it.

Except that the ‘Equity Race Equality Committee’ which was responsible for the attack on Fox in the first place has now replied to the Equity statement declaring that because of Equity's apology to Fox they “feel we have no choice but to resign as committee members.”

Still, I'm sure that we are all very pleased to note that the luvvies are maintaining a laser-like focus on the things that are really challenging this nation at the moment.

What has coronavirus (which I’ve assumed is what you refer to) got to do with any of this?
