And yes of course people who have just eaten can have crashes.
I get a bit twisty if I don't have my sandwich at 1pm !

Religious fasting is a H&S problem that is just starting to be recognised, I was working with a colleague who hadn't eaten or drunk for fifteen hours and there was a noticeable drop in his performance. In risk critical activities this should be accounted for or people may be rightly asking why is someone who is in charge of my welfare not in a fit state to do so?
It's a serious issue that needs to be discussed.
I live in the West Midlands and it is notable that the driving standards drop during Ramadam. Standard practice is to give any head scarved women and visibly Muslim men drivers, an extremely wide berth. Surprisingly, low blood sugar and dehydration do not aid your driving ability.
It does get a little tiresome hearing about Ramadam on the TV and Radio without any advice to participants to consider the safety of the general populace and the effect that their actions are having on others. Perhaps this should be part of the "self reflection" that the holy month is intended to bring about?

Part of the issue with Ramadan is because it's based on the lunar calender it 'moves' through the year ... not as much of an issue in the lower latitudes as their day length varies rather less than the higher latitudes ...
Unfortunately the jurists have not been persuaded on the need for limitation of the length of the fast in the higher latitudes ...

Very useful. Thanks.I'm not fan of magic stories or any of the bullst that comes with them. Driver is a safety critical job and I think stuff like this should be more considered.
The fact the Incident form specifically asks about break times and when you last had something to eat and drink indicates they know the importance of this.
Sadly with the pro everything we have these days the job would be changed the fit the requirements of the religion rather than the other way round.
Looking at the timeframes it is no difference of course to somebody skipping breakfast. That lack of water doesn't help though. Too much being made of the Muslim thing but not surprising considering publications and the readerships they attract.
Regardless, I've read the driver report and that indicates a lack of concentration or route knowledge. Until reading the RAIB report I can't come to any definite conclusions.
Good to note all the safety systems did their job and nobody was hurt.

Missed the reports and titled differently to the rest for some reason.
Anyway, after reading it, as is often the case it seems like a number of factors, including late changes and lack of experience contributed to this rather than the fasting.
New driver
Only driven line twice
Late change to working
Driver not being aware of plan until advised by signaller
