Trump has accepted an offer to visit France for Bastille day. So much for the UK-US special relationship!
The cynic in me suspects that Trump would accept any invitation where there is a suggestion he will be made a fuss of.

It's bewildering that people still think that there is a 'special' relationship. It's empty talk.

Trump's going to do what Trump thinks is good for Trump at that particular nano-second.

Be it fake Time magazine front page, holding a fundraiser at his own hotel, or whatever else.

I'm actually intrigued by Macron, he sounds like he does mean business, but it's still very early days.

Macron hauling the politicians to Versailles was all rather pantomime over the weekend.

The level of smug from Macron was pretty amazing to see, the left boycotted the whole affair and held a rally in Paris with talk of we got rid of our kings with the guillotine, he can bugger off.. biggrin

He threatened a referendum if they don't agree to lose 1/3 of their seats and back his austerity program.

I sense it's all going to end up rather messy!

As an aside, I spent last week in central France, the poor level of service received in a large decent star hotel was beyond amazing. The staff in the larger businesses appear not to give a damn. We ended up going to a local small restaurant after the big place refused to feed us despite being 3/4 hour before closing time, this was after we convinced the hotel receptionist to go in the kitchen and beg as we had a rather tough long day and didn't fancy a 20Km drive to the nearest alternative.

Total contrast where this small family run business couldn't do enough for us. The unions really have fooked France.

This will undoubtedly increase the numbers of asylum seekers reaching France, so not clear why this is "Le Pen" of him?

He's also nationalised some dockyards to block a buyout, despite having previously come out against protectionist policies.

All politicians ultimately turn out to be exactly the same once they get into power. I'm just a little surprised how quickly he's been found out.

I read an article earlier on the shipyard- think it said that this is the only french shipyard capable of building their Naval ships so you could say it is a security risk for it to fall into foreign ownership and he had no choice.

I wonder if it breaks any EU rules though, and if the Italians take it to court or not.

His poll ratings are diving too, all that macho anti-Trump stuff plays well to the left wing media in the UK, the French however appear more concerned about him focusing internally.

No, you've made it quite clear to all of us it's you. When quite a lot of different people point out the same thing about the same person, it's generally because it's true.

Well that didn't take long - Macron's approval ratings are now almost as bad as Trump's poll numbers.

Is one of the reasons for that is that he was the protest vote ?

It was a vote against the mainstream parties and Le Pen, but there was no real thought to could he deliver on anything he planned.

Typically ignoring the fundamental issues with the Eurozone...ah, but it's all right. Things are looking up now over the last few years so nothing needs to be done.

Merkel and her advisors are idiots.

The German people wont accept what needs to be done, Merkel knows this, so its going to be a case of wait until it blows up then try and sort the mess out. It's idiotic, but then the whole Euro project is idiotic.
