"Self-serving philanthropy" is not really what I had in mind, large stuff like hospitals, schools etc is what I am talking about.
That kind of spending happened when the rich were incredibly wealthy and the average worker earned a pittance. Society is very different now, most people in work are not genuinely poor, where they are one illness from the poorhouse and working to death in abject poverty.

We could go back to that society, but its not something to welcome, general taxation should and indeed does cover what people need to not live in the previous hell that was always on the cards for the majority of people.

Maybe you should look at how Gates spends the money. Most of it goes to developing nations issues, not already wealthy areas.

Look up what Gates has done for Polio, arguably one man has done more than the rest of the world combined.

I take the point, it's just not the best example to use.

And plenty of them do give significant sums to charity each and ever year, they just don’t shout about it. (Private Banker working in the charity sector.)

That depresses.me.

It's endemic. My brother is a GP in Lincolnshire. He lives very comfortably, but being in the NHS is a leftie. He naturally believes that taxes should increase - for anyone who earns more than him.
My 'brother' who I have not spoken to or even seen for over 5yrs, hasn't worked for 30 + years! In his view, car owners are killers, (different argument but shows his mentality)

He thinks anyone Earning a wage or God Forbid, a salary, should pay for people like him to t*ss it off!!

That's why I don't speak to him!! Last time I tried to explain why I turned down his son, who asked me for a couple of grand to finance a 'Man with Van' scheme when he had no driving license, neither did his mate, but I was The Bad Guy!!

We Fell Out, Big Style!!

Then he tried, whilst I was there listening to his phone call to my Mum, to get his hands on her savings!! We Fell Out Again!!

Must Admit to threatening certain parts of his anatomy!!

He's never tried to get in touch since, nor does he know, or has even tried to find out, where my Mum's Care Home Is!! Loving Son??

But the mentality is, 'The rest of you OWE me, and my friends!!

F*CK RIGHT OFF!!

Sort of connected relating to how screwed things are now, and these are my observations from what I have seen - not sure of circumstances so may be wrong, but...

There is a block of flats near us that house people on benefits. They literally do nothing all day except drink, play loud music and then argue and fight. They use a disproportionate amount of time for both the police and NHS it seems, and half of the residents somehow have brand new cars. I know that some pretend to have some kind of handicap with their prop walking sticks, yet they seem as fit as a fiddle and have no problems fighting with each other, they look pretty sprightly to me.

Yet most of my friends, who all have half decent jobs at the very least, do not have brand new cars. It seems to me, from a very simple observation, that we are not only paying for our lifestyles, paying our taxes and doing our best to live within our means, and rarely using the social services, police/NHS etc., but we are also funding these people who will never work in their lives, yet probably have the same net disposable income as some of us who work 8-12 hours per day. When did benefits stop being a temporary safety net for people in-between jobs and become a lifestyle choice?

The financial alchemy used to keep this rotten state of affairs going for as long at it has is baffling to me, but clearly, if Corbyn's version of Labour ever got into power, this would collapse in short order, as it does in all socialist-type regimes.

As someone who has always believed in working hard and making sacrifices for even the little things in life you want, I find the mind-set of having everything for free, paid by others, perplexing.

Agreed - unfortunately you'll have the liberals all up in arms because it's a very small problem in the grand scheme of things and your example is just anecdotal.

Just as mine is too biggrin

It would be better if both sides stopped using the NHS for political means. I despise both parties for this. They should put aside political aims and just sort out the management of the thing.

Never going to happen though, it will keep sinking no matter how much loot is thrown at it.

I like how he thinks car owners are evil, but van drivers should be encouraged.

Agreed, I think it would be a good thing for the Tories to remove one of Labours key policies against them. Take politics out of the equation and the Labour arguments are weaker.

Seems like a good choice.

"The newly selected Labour parliamentary candidate for the marginal seat of Worcester is a fantasist who has been placed under 14 extended civil restraint orders by the High Court"

"Abbott said she was an “obsessive” whose claims about the election “cannot be true”.

Richards, a strong supporter of Jeremy Corbyn, said the organisations placed her under surveillance, tampered with her car and bicycle, interfered with her mail, invaded her home or failed to protect her from attempts to poison her because of her political views.

So she’s mental...

Will fit right in.

I'm not so sure, I didn't see any mentions of Zionists being behind it all
