The US? They aren't going to fking invade Europe! rolleyes I'm only 30% sure Russia will bother either!

With Macrons popularity in the fking toilet, I wonder just who this proclamation is designed to appeal to?

Is this the same France that has always refused to have its troops under NATO control?

Not always - they pulled out of the integrated command in 1966 (the Navy actually in 1963) but came back into the fold in 2009 IIRC.

I'm not sure anybody noticed their absence tbh...

Leo “the lion” Varadkar has pledged that Ireland will play its part and replace the U.K. when it leaves the EU

They will deploy all 16 of their aeroplanes ( non combat) all of their fighting ships ... er sorry none again, well 8 patrol boats anyway, and all it’s armour .. yes they have about six armoured cars .. without guns

So we’re all safe smile

At least there will be no discussion on the flag they'll use - just a plain white one usually suffices for the French.

His approval rating currently sits at 29%...….an all time low for a French president.

The flag that flutters in the opposite direction to the rapidly disappearing French.

"They did surrender, the flag was just there>>, it's now 5 miles away, you can just make it out on the horizon" biggrin

Explains his Napolean complex and wanting his own army.

If you want an EU army - you want the nation states to commend it......

I think we are leaving in the nick of time.

No issues with the EU having an army.

But... where is the money coming from to fund it?

Conceding that, I think my point about French military cooperation is clear.

Indeed, and driven by fundamentals that being part of Europe won't cure.

From the UK perspective, since 1707, we have been allied with France in 18 conflicts but fought against them in 20, which would tend to suggest that our interests often coincide markedly but equally diverge markedly. In geopolitical strategy terms, that does not make them a terribly good bet as long-term allies.

In the same time period, we have been involved in 11 conflicts with the USA as allies and three with them as enemies (all some considerable time ago, the last being the Pig War of 1859).

Funnily enough, the two World Wars apart, in all other conflicts, Germany has been allied to the UK and, WW2 apart, so has Italy.

In terms of unequivocal friendship, over the same time period, the UK has been uniformly on the same side with Portugal (8-0), Canada (6-0), Belgium (4-0) Greece (6-0), Australia (6- 0) and New Zealand (5-0).
