Absolutely scandalous.

I find the should Kim stay or go question mildly annoying.

There's a consultant who works for us who was deployed to a client. He's a good consultant but with this particular client they just didnt click and it was clear the relationship wasn't working.

Our choices were simply a) ask the consultant to adapt his approach and hope for the best, or b) accept it just wasnt working, put someone else in with the client and redeploy the first guy to the next customer.

We went with b, everyone was happy.

Whether Kim is in the right or wrong should be irrelevant, the only question that really matters is how is the nations interest best served (I.e not Boris's, the Govt's or even Kim's).

Unfortunately Boris wouldn’t commit to letting the current Ambassador stay until he retires in January which in itself is appalling.

British politicians now being dictated to by a foreign country. Sovereignty’s a bh, ain’t it?
Why is it "appalling"?

WTF is an ambassador doing writing stuff like that down in the first place. And then letting it get leaked.

Doesn't strike me as especially...diplomatic. Seems pretty stupid.

Whether he retires in 6mths or not is of no consequence. He's made his job all but impossible to do with any efficacy it seems.

There is plenty of outrage about Trump, faux or otherwise...but I think there needs to be much more respecting of the position rather than the man.
What do you think one of the most important roles of any ambassador is?

They always could smile Here is Theresa May doing this last year: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-43402506

When a country is annoyed with another, they often give named diplomats x hours/days to leave.

Actually surprising that Trump hasn't kicked him out.

yes

Sadly those who think The Donald is “a breath of fresh air” etc. have no idea it seems.

All a bit of a storm in a teacup. The media are just grabbing the opportunity to abuse Trump, on the pretext of quoting someone else, with both hands.

In reality it is the summer holidays so there won't be any diplomatting required until September, at which time he'll only have 4 months left in post, so we will just have a slightly longer period of handover to his successor.

Time for a few facts. I'm a former civil servant, and I was fortunate enough to read the cables of some of our ambassadors and other diplomatic staff in the Middle East between 1994 and 1996. Our ambassadors pride themselves on (and are selected for) their independent thinking. I read some very bracing comments on assorted leaders and generals in the Middle East and beyond, which was very useful for policy back in London. However, the insight and opinion was provided in strict confidence, and naturally was covered by the Official Secrets Act.

Anyone who thinks Sir Kim has been "undiplomatic" by conveying his thoughts in private correspondence simply doesn't understand how our diplomatic service works. The key question is who leaked the correspondence, and why. My best guess is that one of Boris' sniveling little ar$e lickers did it, on the basis that chaos works for their proven liar of a leader.

Regrettably, Boris and his bellends have jeopardized the career of one of our finest diplomats for his usual tawdry political gain. The USA is entirely within its rights to demand that Sir Kim is replaced, unfortunately.

There is no facts in your statement above just your own biased opinion and a wild guess about who leaked it.

Your impartiality and independent thinking is no where to be seen, bit like the ambassador.

You’ve just watched too much C4 News.

Even by the standards of PH that's a bizarre response. The key question in all of this is who leaked and why, the content of the email is supposed to be confidential and it is quite normal for diplomats to exchange frank and honest views, it's their job. The Times reported yesterday that there's concern that the email was intercepted and leaked by a 'foreign agent', personally I think it's imperative we find out who and why.

An ambassador should be totally free to write or think what he believes to be the truth. It is part of his job.

However his ability to be effective in his role depends much on there being a healthy relationship with the country they are working in. This is also part of the job.

Should the 1st part of the job compromise the 2nd then it's time to change. If his thoughts/communications remain private there is no compromise. In this case they have been made public & he is compromised. Whoever leaked the communications knew that.

He has done nothing wrong, but needs to be replaced. Ambassadors are changed all the time, it's part of the job.

He has zero knowledge of the current situation just his own wild guess at who leaked the emails and why based on his own warped opinions and supposed previous experience a couple of decades ago.

There is nothing new or independent thinking in what the ambassador wrote in the emails. The same criticism of President Trump is heard on C4 News and CNN every night of the week.

You're ignoring the fundamental issue here, either the email account was leaked or hacked by someone who wanted him replaced. That's the disturbing bit.

Has it occurred to you that said criticism might have some basis ?

What’s your experience of working with HM Ambassadors and the attendant apparatus ?

I'm not & I agree it's disturbing, but once that's been done, and done knowing the consequences there is no going back.

What we see in your posts is a neat summation of why this country is in the mess it's currently in - every Tom Dick and Harry has been allowed to delude themselves that their own ill-informed, intellectual arse-wash is of equal validity to the views and opinions of people who have taken the trouble to know what they're talking about. If you actually took the trouble to read the other guys post and ask him some questions about his experience, you might actually learn something....

A worthy post, but he's at one end of what is a particularly worrying scale.

Indeed. Everybody has "an opinion" and now has the ability to shout it to everybody. The public are notoriously poor at decision making when given information .
