This thread is going off at a tangent !

Getting back to Trump. We all know how loony he is but when he backed the repeal for the affordable care act, aka Obamacare, backed/created by Paul Ryan, it failed completely, not because it was a good initial compromise, but because it did not go far enough. So the right wing freedom caucus in the GOP blocked it. So if Donald is mad, what does that make them ???? rolleyes

Let's just roll back a few months. Obama in the executive branch could not get the legislative branch, ie congress to function. Could not even get his supreme court pick to be discussed, never mind stopping government almost being shut down every few months.

So now we have a new President and guess what. Same old sh!t

Donald gets the bad vibes but the US congress seems to be the problem. Compare that when FDR came to power before the war. The US was in a complete mess, the US congress bit the bullet and put into power what FDR wanted, even if they had reservations. The rest is history.

The US way of politics now seems to be so partisan that nothing much can be done by anyone.
The question for those who think this is all about Trump is could any other president have done better?. The problem with replacing Obamacare was not Trump, who backed the plan put forward by the mainstream of the party, but the extremist fringe who wouldn't vote for it.

Never really bothered with US politics before this President. How partisan is the political scene so to speak?

That is to say, a bill, that may be beneficial to a lot of people, is wasted because both sides cannot agree only because they hate the other side. Stuff must happen or, as I understand it, there would be more shutdowns.

Trumps also lost out on the Trade battle over mexico and tuna.
The World Trade Organisation ruled that Mexico is allowed to impose $163m (£127m) a year in sanctions against the US on trade in tuna.

Meanwhile the Donald has intensified a trade dispute with Canada, slapping tariffs of up to 24 per cent on imported softwood lumber.

Also all that glitters isn't gold, for those that threw in with the Trump administration theres been quite a few casualties.

Yesterday Jason Chaffetz said that he’s immediately taking leave from Congress due to a problem with his foot, a 12 year old injury.

So a couple of weeks ago intelligence sources reported that the FBI was looking into Jason Chaffetz being blackmailed by Russia, then last week Chaffetz suddenly announced that he won’t be running for reelection, even though he’s just three months into his current term, he’s seeking private sector jobs, and that he may not finish his current term.

There were then reports that Chaffetz illegally took Russian money and that the FBI caught him.

Chaffetz, Flynn, Epshteyn, Carter Page....

I'm not sure that's entirely right. As I understand Trumpcare was objected to by two distinct strands of the GOP. First those who thought it went nowhere near far enough in stripping back Obamacare. And secondly, and more surprisingly, a much more moderate wing of the GOP who considered that it went too far in removing the benefits of healthcare (apparently there is a sizable chunk of Christian Republican support that is strongly in favour of a system that requires the rich to subsidise healthcare for the poor - Christian charity and all that).

I don't think he failed because of an extremist fringe derailing the mainstream of the party. The truth is that the party is simply far too fractured on this issue in the first place.

At this stage, the Republicans have a majority, but the problem is that they are so fractured they can't agree on anything substantial.
The situation you are referring to did happen during Obama's presidency, when the Republicans blocked everything they could.

Does seem odd that group that has the key to the sweet shop cannot get their act together. Who ever is in charge. Maybe when they reach an impasse for too long its rock paper scissors.

On another note.

Interesting. Obama's lot authorised Flynn and re authorised him 2016. Spicer is now blaming Obama admin. If true, what did the admin know and what was acceptable?

That is not excusing the new President admin for not doing their job properly.

Methinks there is more.

Corbyn's PLP are similar, and the Tories have been the same in the past, although the GOP do seem particularly bad. hehe

Presumably Trump is the GOP candidate by default at the next election? (Impeachment notwithstanding...) If the Dems can find a non-toxic candidate then surely they're a shoe in.

Flynn was fired by Obama in 2014. Seems strange then to have him reauthorised in 2016? I guess it depends on what he was still doing?

Trumps latest tweat:
"As families prepare for summer vacations in our National Parks - Democrats threaten to close them and shut down the government. Terrible!"

Hang on - he's just signed an executive order yesterday that will be used to allow exploitation of the national parks.

I was reading that the other day. He seems to be going after parks that were made up as such recently. And many when Clinton and Obama signed them off.
He wants to stamp all over what Obama did, gets Clinton as a bonus.

Aha - but he isn't closing them. In future you will be able to observe the grizzlies as they meander across freeways and marvel at the buffalo as they negotiate their way through the oil refineries.

It'll be great.

Interesting article in Politico today on how illegal immigration over the Mexican border is down 40% since he took office, despite little to nothing actually having been done on the ground yet to reduce it. Families with children down 90%. Seems simply talking about giving the illegals a harder time has been enough to put many off.
