What about fixed term parliament? Isn't that to stop capatilising on short term popularity?

Spare a thought for poor George Osbourne. He will have an interesting time getting elected with his multi tasking.

I know the polls are hugely in her favour but there is certainly a whiff of arrogance and presumption about this statement... The Lib Dem & SNP position is a perfectly valid one and to try and portray them as some kind of traitors is a bit over the top. The whole point of opposition is to challenge and oppose... May sounds like she wants to finalise a 1 party state with this election.

Utter garbage. The other parties haven't put up any challenge or opposition. All they've done is snipe and criticise without a single rational thought or argument.

The only thing they've achieved is forcing this decision, as May said, and I truly hope they get their comeuppance. If things go well we'll ever hear of Corbyn or Farron again.

I'm not but I will be voting Tory this year. I don't fancy dealing with the fallout of Scotland becoming a destitute, communist wasteland, so hopefully this will be the death knell of the bogus SNP.

good point, wouldn't be surprised if Libdems get good traction on this then Labour reverse their decision and sweep up all of the pro-EU votes, possibly providing a surprise win
Hoping that predictions of a Conservative convincing win will be on the cards, but given how divided the population currently is on the leave/remain of the EU then I guess this will be probably the most important factor of the vote.

So it then falls in to place that Labour or LibDem will capitalise on this.

I voted leave and will surely vote Conservative, but having just spoken to a few people they are saying even though they are long time Tory voters, they would be tempted to vote for any party that would keep the UK in the EU.

End of the Labour Party is nigh surely? I can't see anything other than them being decimated.

I suppose the big question is will Labour try and take an opportunistic gamble to campaign on overturning brexit?

They don't seem to have any cards to play to change government, knowing there is 49 percent of voters who might vote on a single issue will they be tempted to take a clear stance?

If she does announce an election and wins she could just go down in History as the saviour of the Labour Party.
My initial thoughts too. She's just done the Labour Party a massive favour, in fact they'll probably spend more time trying to find a new leader in the next 5 weeks than campaigning to win.

yeah, I feel the same but sweeping around our office just now and asking people (all of which voted conservative) they said they'd happily vote for dems/labour to remain in the EU.

Unlikely. I suspect that at least 1 in 4 people will still vote for them and they will end up with circa 180 seats.

All this just to get Carswell, but overkill.... biggrin

Anyhoo, I reckon a Tory win, but leaking seats back to the LDs in the West country....don't trust polls right now. D:

Could be the end of UKIP? As you would imagine most will now vote for the Tories seeing as May is Mrs Brexit.

A real rock and a hard place for those that wanted to remain in the EU.
So Remainers who will you vote for ?
It seems the only logical party for Remainers and those that want a soft Brexit is the Lib Dems.

Carmichael is already sprouting how successful the Lib Dums have been in by-elections ..... I don't think he's been entirely realistic though!

Looks like she is trying to protect the Tory party from the post-brexit backlash that would have happened in 2020.
