In the last 3 years I've been to the polls for:

Scottish Indy Ref
General Election
Hollyrood Elections
Brexit
Scottish Council Elections are in May
And now another General Election in June

To be frank I'm fking sick of our needy politicians and wish they would just get on with the fking job and leave me alone.

Incredibly good piece of political strategy. Thanks to Corbyn labour are in complete disarray and she gives them no time to pull a proper campaign together. A good opportunity to make a grab for more seats and get a bigger majority, of course she knows Corbyn will get the blame when Labour get decimated and will trigger the final meltdown of his party.

I think its more an indication that she will need a large majority in the house to get all the EU related legislation through without the need to water it down. It also points towards a longer transitional relationship with the EU than would be politically acceptable for a lot of people.
Agree. It's all about having a mandate clarity to negotiate a strong and sustainable position on Brexit, and bring stability.

Looking at the predictions from Electoral Calculus - I don't think that there will be any change in Scotland.

Tories to gain 50 seats, 49 from Labour and 1 from UKIP (their last prediction predates Carswell's resignation)
Labour to lose 50 seats (49 to Tories, 1 to Plaid Cymru)

That's it. No change for Lib Dems or SNP.

I know the polls are hugely in her favour but there is certainly a whiff of arrogance and presumption about this statement... The Lib Dem & SNP position is a perfectly valid one and to try and portray them as some kind of traitors is a bit over the top. The whole point of opposition is to challenge and oppose... May sounds like she wants to finalise a 1 party state with this election.
The traitorous dogs of the SNP will be in dismay over this announcement.

...so on 8 June we can all do that - draw a line under it and get on with it, clear the air.

Wow, didn't expect that. Thought she would wait for the boundaries to change.

No, boundary review won't take place until next year.

So Corbyn now gets to face the electorate for real... many believed he'd be gone before the next GE was due on 2020. It will be interesting (to say the least!) to see how the opinion polls reflect reality. It'll be good to have a real opposition after the election -- whoever wins smile

Perfectly timed given that.

Surely if it is an GE announcement then that will then become a proxy EU referendum won't it?
LibDems coming out straight away with a "vote for us and vote for the EU".... with the "leave" vote split between the rest of the parties.... in which it may see a LibDem win ?

As the UK is very much split down the middle on the EU issue, I think a GE would be reckless.
good point, wouldn't be surprised if Libdems get good traction on this then Labour reverse their decision and sweep up all of the pro-EU votes, possibly providing a surprise win

The wet remoaners on here perpetually say 'she's not even elected' (not that you elect a PM anyway) when she became PM.

She will be now!
And earliest date by look of it. Neat move.

I can just see Dum Farron running round like a headless chicken, and Jeremy thinking 'is this the end?'

Update. Pound has recovered.

Would/could labour block it and wait for a little brexit fallout in 2020 and play on it. I know they backed a snap election before but if they had sensible heads on they would hold off (granted most of labour don't have common sense).

Looks like the Tories are going to win an extra 20-60 seats.

Tories are 1/14 to win, at the bookies, as close to a near-certainty as you're gonna get.
