Brother in law needs a trailer to tow behind his Fiesta. Size is open to discussion. Where's the best place to buy a trailer? We're near Guildford.

Yep, second hand, Gumtree, Ebay etc. I looked for ages and managed to bag a Daxara 107 (it's an Erde 102 but labelled Daxara) in decent nick a couple of weeks ago for £140. Check the ads regularly and don't hang around, as anything reasonably priced seems to go really quickly. I responded to countless ads within a couple of hours of them being posted and they had already gone.

Ebay, search "car transport trailer", filter by nearest first. Theres one in basingstoke at the moment, classic mini sized. should be good for a fiesta.

This is mine, I've bought a mesh side kit and cover from Indespension which raises the height of the sides an extra 1 and half foot (the kit was £89).

The load area of the trailer is 3 foot 5 inch by 2 foot 9 inch, weighs about 55kg empty so we've been able to tip it onto its end and wheel through our side gate on some castors. It has a max weight of 350kg so can be loaded with just less than 300kg.

That's a pretty comprehensive shout for second hand. Can't argue with that in terms of value. If he had to buy new because he's in a hurry, is there a preferred retailer?

I looked around for brand new, but prices were pretty similar. For the Erde 102/Daxara 107, it will be about £240 brand new and Halfords do them, but I think they may charge extra to actually build it for you, otherwise it is self-build, but it's all bolt together stuff, nothing difficult.

There's an Indespension at Gatwick, if you pick it up from them, they will build it free of charge.

There are cheaper trailers (new) on Ebay than the likes of Indepension and Ifor Williams. Or Halfords if you want to pay a lot for a small trailer.

Mine came from Ebay and was £60. Its 6ft by 4ft and is great for tip runs and picking up building stuff.

I honestly don't think there is. I spent weeks very recently looking on eBay and Gumtree every single night and there was nothing new for less than £200 and even then, it would mean travelling 60+ plus miles each way. Second hand is the way to go, but it's a waiting game for something local, unless the OP wants to travel to buy something. This for example is £200 and has 24 people watching, certainly not new and not cheap. There are plenty of other similar examples at similar prices right now on Ebay.

A brand new Erde/Daxara is £240, second hand ones are regularly selling quickly for upwards of £150, I know, because I've emailed and bid on at least 20 trailers in the last 4 weeks (wooden ones, metal ones etc etc) and they've gone for silly money or been sold before I enquired.

Edit - The one I bought was a 60 mile round trip for me. It was £140, new it would have been £249. I emailed the guy on the Sunday night and said I'd take it, but couldn't pick it up until Tuesday night. The seller was brilliant and gave me some extra bits he had for the trailer and he kept it for me until the Tuesday, but he had 5 more people queuing to buy if I hadn't shown up for it.

Depends? Something like this for £70 would be fine with a few quid and little bit of time spent on it. Admittedly it depends on how local the trailer is to you, but if you find something local or are prepared to travel it doesnt need to be expensive.

Thanks guys. Probably Halfords then. The good thing is that even if he sells it in the future it looks like he'll have no trouble getting a fair chunk of the purchase price back.

For new there is also Trident Trailers, who have branches all over the place. And yes my experience is as per others on here, trailers on Ebay are very popular going for reasonable money (for the seller!)

If it's erde / daxara lift it up and spin the wheel, listen for bearing noise

The lights very rarely work, purchase a set of let replacements from eBay and crimp them on in place

Lights on trailers are always ste so leds are the way forward

I wanted a little trailer for storing all the camping gear in, full time, to live in the garage. so no loading of car, just hitch up and sod off.

honestly- gumtree came up trumps. paid £175 for over £700 worth of erde trailer. owned by an old chap, used apparently "once" for one camping trip.

do know what, I believed him, it was an absolute gem, garaged and he'd got every extra and lock you could think of.

loaded up, it tows fine and in fact has now even been from yorkshire to france.

but I agree with others, you've got to do a lot of looking and there is some proper junk out there.

Also remember with erde/daxara that they use a "european" size of wheel.
So do not buy a spare without checking that it will fit. A lot of the caravan shop/go outdoors ones wont. I had to order mine from an erde dealer, not massively expensive but a hassle to track down.

A shop called towing and trailers on line knock em out cheap, also they are usually tubeless so if they are flat in pictures you will struggle to get them inflated without a bit of pissing about

If you are looking at the erde 102 / daxara 107
Or erde 122 / daxara 127 they are 8 inch tyres. If you are looking to buy new wheels the 10 inch wheels are a direct swap and will help reduce bearing wear. The erde 142 comes with 10 inch wheels

Another good accessory is the tiny hitch lock, can get them for around 2.50 to 5 on eBay, allows the trailer to be locked to the vehicle

They are so small I keep mine in my ash tray so they are always available.

I often buy trailers, use them for a project then sell them for around the same price, saves storing them, bit like a rental service smile
