After the deaths of 2 innocent individuals on the Evo Triangle last year :

http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/s...

I've avoided the roads of The Triangle over the last 12 months as the BIB have increased their presence after the locals complained about it being used as a "race track" (something I said would happen if individuals continued to drive around The Triangle repeatedly, on another PH forum back in 2005...) :

http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/f...

However having done a large lap of Central and Northern Wales this morning I decided to do a steady tour of the ET (I took in two sides of it).

Despite the "threat" of increased BIB presence, there was some nice metal out, 458, 458 Speciale, 400i, 599. an Aston of some description along with some classic stuff.

North and Central Wales was subjected to incredibly heavy downpours up until midday, but the Triangle was starting to dry out nicely by the time I got there. But the next downpour looked to be imminent ..... :

Enjoy.

A word of warning to those thinking of doing a loop. I drove round at the legal limit, and sure enough on the road running adjacent to Lake Brenig (the B4501) no more than half a mile North of the visitor centre there was a "suspicious" looking Black/Dark Grey Audi A4 parked up with gentleman sitting inside who looked like BiB. No sign of any speed measurement devices, but most would be driving at well over the speed limit along that section of road, so it would be very obvious if you were speeding.

Unfortunately large areas of trees surrounding and adjacent to the Triangle roads are now being felled, and for me it's changing the character of the roads, and regrettably not in a good way frown
Some sections used to be reminiscent of driving through the Black Forest (no matter how briefly), now those sections have gone and I suspect are unlikely to be replanted in our lifetimes cry

The B500 South of Baden Baden :

The car's awesome biggrin

(though the front end feels a bit stiff in the wet ....) yikes

Well done for venturing out today - I was tempted for a drive around North Wales today but chickened out when I saw the forecast. We had some quite heavy showers over Cheshire today.

However, tomorrow looks nice and dry....

Well it being wetter makes the drive slower and more challenging , and there's usually a lot less traffic out and about too !

Enjoy it if you venture out tomorrow smile

The Evo triangle itslef is one of the poorest roads in the area. Gets you into the right part of the world but the actual "thing" is a total waste of time.

I was driving on the EVO triangle around midday today in my GT4 and apart from a black Cayenne which was holding me up and a few Caterhams not many nice machinery.Agree roads were slightly damp but pretty traffic free. I saw a nice silver Ferrari 599 at Dolgellau on the way back and more Caterhams. The most frustrating part of fast hooning in a fast car on weekends is the backlog of slow drivers you keep catching up with..

I don't recall saying it was a good road ... and not really sure why so many threads about the ET turn into "It's not a good road/there are better".
It's a good test of car's suspension and chassis dynamics, that's why Evo use/used it.
No one said it's a great driving road, though personally I like it and the scenery.

FWIW I lived less than 25minutes from The Triangle between 2003-2009, and rest assured I know a good majority of the roads around there.

But furthermore I spent what turned out to be many wasted/futile hours on the "Roads" forum between 2003-2009 PM'ing contributors asking them to remove their posts stating they'd done numerous laps of the ET in an afternoon or morning. Likewise asking them not to publicise the other roads in the area, as once a road becomes popular it's only a matter of time until someone crashes and kills themselves, of in the case of last year's accident on the ET, innocent members of the public.

And even if the worst doesn't happen, the hoardes of budding Max Verstappens WILL attract the attention of the locals or the BiB.

You'll also note I mentioned my visit to the ET was but a small part of a large loop of North and Central Wales ... smile

The rain definitely kept the majority off the roads, but if traffic is a problem, you may need to reset your alarm clock ....

There was a pack of at least 8/10 Fezzas out. I warned them about the suspicious looking Audi parked up by Lake Brenig.

I'm surprised he didn't also tell you that a Cayman R is much too stiff for those roads! laugh

I always wonder; how do journalists seemingly get away with driving fast and not getting pulled? Do you get more slack as a journalist?

I'm sure they always try to tell the truth, so maybe they just think they are going faster than they really are. There's no way they would be cut any more slack from the judiciary, especially not if people have died on roads they have suggested as being good to drive at above the speed limit on.

Cayman looks great out in North Wales Slippydiff - lovely car, lovely scenery. Off that way myself in the morning, but will be using roads that the performance car fraternity don't seem to have found yet, and hoping there aren't too many silly sods out trying to prove they can manage motorbikes that they don't appear capable of riding terribly well.

It's always stormy in Wales

A 10 minute gap in the clouds to make the GT4 pop some where along that route.

The "Unicorn" was a Gen 2 987 S specced with PCCB's, folding carbon buckets etc, etc. In essence an R, but not an R (albeit with a price tag worrying close to an R)
FP alleges it's a better car than an R as a result of its softer suspension.
I thought the front of the R too stiff in the wet yesterday (it felt like it needs slightly softer front springs or the front anti-roll disconnecting (or a softer bar altogether) Once the Tarmac was drying/dry it felt fine.

So normal rhetoric then, ie softly sprung car = better road car

Not really as a PASM car is not as good imo, it's too soft off and too hard/bumpy on,also far more understeer as it runs a weaker rear arb.

No car is perfect but the oem R set up is what I would class as "fun" and what makes the R the R, it's the main asset and I think after market slick shocks would just make you go faster, which is ok if that's what you want, over fun.

Also it's very fussy on tyres and what psi is in them, P zero are dire and Bridgestone feel harsh.

Goodyears are not too bad and PS2 are ok in the dry but poor in the wet.

Supersports are amazing and I do think after running the new PS4S a while a better tyre. But in the wet the PS4S is better.

I also run cup 2's and they are harsh but grippy.
I have run all 7 tyres on a R as it happens.

Not sure what Slippy has on or has checked his front psi, I tend to only run 29psi up front.
And if hooning one might even let a bit of air out after the 1st 5 miles.

I am not sure I would want the front softer as fighting dive on softer sprung cars is a pain, and an issue on my GT4 hence looking at the DSC which has been programmed to stop dive on the GT4.

SuperSports. Delivered with 26psi in all round (they felt too soft) I inflated them to 31 (felt too hard....) dropped 2psi out a couple of weeks ago, feels about right now smile

Dampers a bit harsh when cold and better when warm. Wasn't massively impressed with the SuperSports in the wet yesterday to be honest, but they didn't impress me in the wet on the 997 GT3 either really. Good in the dry though. A mate's R has Goodyears on, from memory the old F1's felt "OK" in the dry, but were excellent in the wet. Not sure the trade off in dry grip is worth the better wet grip.
