When you're an apprentice, office junior, or even a PA you're expected to do a lot of things just to help out more senior , especially if you aren't busy. I don't think it's a mickeytake to ask the apprentice to wash the boss's car to be honest.
As I said previoulsy, it can be very difficult keeping an untrained member of staff busy 100% of the time. Yes, they are work shadowing someone but that someone isnt always available and so it makes sense to give them a bit of monkey work instead of having them twiddling their thumbs in the corner.

I don't think it's a mickeytake to ask the apprentice to wash the boss's car to be honest. if you work in a garage or dealership. You're probably dressed in overalls, all the washing paraphernalia is there. It's not as if a trainee accountant is being asked to do it.
There is always business stuff to do. Or training the apprentice can do. Remember an apprentice is there to learn.

Everything cleaned? Filed? Super. Here is a starter motor, try stripping it and reassembling, etc. Learnt to update the web site. Learn to take good photos of the stock, etc Washing the bosses car is the bosses job, or pay the apprentice after hours.

Apprentices start at the bottom, if tea needs making that's the apprentices job. That's how it's always been and how it always will.

Update the website? rofl

What is the difference between the apprentice mechanic and the apprentice accountant, both are there to learn their specific role, using your logic just as justifiable to ask the apprentice accountant at the dealership to wash the bosses car.

Nope. We hire apprentices from school. They are treated as everyone else. They make the tea for themselves.

Training the apprentice usually takes time. Most things need another member of staff to show them what to do, and often there's nobody available. But that isn't actually the point. Junior members of staff get asked to do stuff to help out more senior members of staff. In the context of a car dealership I don't think it's unusual for them to be asked to wash the boss's car. For example in the office It's not a PA's job to pick up her boss's dry cleaning, or to get cards/flowers for the wife, or umpteen other things they get asked to do but it would be quite surprising if they said "no".

I wouldn't trust an apprentice accountant with my car (even washing it). whereas I would hope that an apprentice mechanic knew that the battery and the ECU didnt need washing with Fairy Liquid.....

Well quite, but that's a failure of management living in the 1970s.

Along with an assumption that a PA has to be a "her" wink

You remind me a little bit of my father-in-law.

Doesn't understand that the world has changed since he was a lad, cannot fathom how my wife can work from home, on her work laptop:

"If you're not in the office, you'll not get noticed, you'll not be getting a bonus from me" etc.

Doesn't realise that industry is much more organised, structured and flexible than it used to be, and frankly, is a bit of a dinosaur. The sort of thing that went on in his day is now completely unacceptable.

Which is why I was asking how old you were. You and I are clearly from different generations.
Err, you will be surprised to know that I run an IT company predominantly from home these days. Bloody technology...

Their FB page has been somewhat taken over by reviews!

Don't think anyone who visits their page will be left in any doubt as to what happened!

Bit of a PR nightmare for the company that will take a bit of getting out of. I think they could start with acknowledging their wrong and apologies to the family? Although that might take some sincerity! Also the sacking of the key managers would be good too. One only hopes that the blood these guys have on their hands doesn't wash off for a long time!

Don't you miss greasing up another man's balls though? That seems like something any right thinking man would miss.

Who here can't honestly say that when thinking up a "prank" the first thing they think of is to get their hands on another mans balls? Then grease them all up nice and greasy like.

Not at all surprised. It was common for those in printing to go into IT when things went pear shaped, yes?

You do have a bit of a "back in my day..." vibe about you though.
Nope, robotics was next...

Just think of me as Uncle Albert and you'll be fine.

And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not on the tools,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
Who greased his balls with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

What is someone who is employed to learn the intricacies of fixing cars going to learn from washing one?
Actually you can learn quite a bit about shut lines, panel gaps, and so on washing cars. Okay if you do it '£6 all in, £8 for 4x4's' style you aren't but a proper wash and you start to notice things like how to spot over spray on a good repair job, etc.

WW, you confuse me a bit.

On this thread, you're King Bants.

On cycling threads, you're delicate Daisy.

What's the difference between bullying of colleagues, and bullying of cyclists (as the cycling fraternity would have you believe happens by nasty nasty cagers)?

Not all road users. Just the selfish ones. My roads are for the benefit of all users, no matter how many wheels or legs... biggrin

And you didn't answer the question... Why is bullying of one form acceptable, and not the other?
