Repugnant Michael Barrymore is to get "more than nominal damages". Good eh. Looks like he'll get the couple of million he's after. Amazing Essex Police did not have reasonable grounds to suspect that Mr Barrymore was guilty - considering the victim was found floating in his pool. Common sense is obviously not allowed in this ridiculous country.

Coppers are going to need a lawyer standing next to them every time they consider whether or not they are allowed to arrest someone.

Not the best phrase to use in this context when trying to admonish the less PC contributors about their crude comments biggrin

I'll never look at a pool thermometer in the same way ever again.

The reason given by the Judge seems bizarre to my non-legal mind:

"While Mr Justice Stuart-Smith found there was "information available to the police that could have provided an arresting officer with reasonable grounds for a lawful arrest" the one officer with sufficient information to carry it out was not there at the time the entertainer was arrested.
That officer was stuck in traffic at the time, Essex Police said.
As a result, said Mr Justice Stuart-Smith, the arrest was unlawful and Mr Barrymore was therefore "entitled to recover more than nominal damages"."

Apparently Essex Police are going to appeal. I guess their budget for legal costs is bottomless.

It's the sort of joke I'd have told at the time and thought it was funny. I was known for "near the knuckle" jokes and thought nothing about being a bit un pc.

Near the knuckle? I suspect he got a bit more than that, more like the whole fist.

Crazy. So effectively they arrested him 1/2 hour too early.

I had direct dealings with him for a charity dinner just before the pool incident. I have yet to meet a nastier, less funny, less self-obsessed pathetic excuse for a man. A Five Star Knut.

Jimmy Carr could also fit into that category?

You haven't quoted the whole judgement though. According to the BBC, the judge gave several reasons in his detailed judgement, why Barrymore should NOT have been charged.

It seems like just another police cock up. Maybe they didn't like Barrymore either?

I thought this was about the legality of the arrest. Nothing to do with charging.

Can't believe he got away with it TBH. Prior to the incident he publicly stated he'd be doing Aladdin that year.

Couldn't have been him that night as he was in the West End in theatre; I heard he was doing A LAD IN.

Barrymore could find himself in deep water after this Court of Appeal ruling. No doubt he’ll be away to drown his sorrows now.

“Entertainer Michael Barrymore will receive only nominal damages from Essex Police after an unlawful arrest which he claimed had "destroyed his career".
The comedian and TV presenter had hoped for a payout of more than £2.4m from the force in relation to his 2007 wrongful arrest on suspicion of the rape and murder of Stuart Lubbock.
Essex Police challenged the amount it owed him and has won its appeal.
This Court of Appeal ruling overturns the 2017 High Court ruling”

Showbiz insiders say that they are remaking a classic Bruce Lee movie, but set in Barrymore’s swimming pool. Fisting Fury.

He was always going to get arrested, so the 'it destroyed my career' is meaningless here. It was just fortunate for Barrymore the arresting officer bizarrely didn't have the grounds (which did exist) at the time of the arrest.

I think the dead person in the pool, the link to drugs, refusing to answer questions at Lubbock's inquest and all the negative media attention from 2001 on wards essentially destroyed his career.

I've obviously flipped with my twin from the almost parallel world...

I was certain he was dead and even reading posts from 2017 kept thinking 'thought he died before 2017'...

Bizarre, that and my cock is now much smaller than it was!
