John was a big part of my childhood along with Peter Purves and Lesley Judd, a little part of me would like to think he's now taking Shep for a walk up some sunny hillside.

RIP.

The obits say he had a troubled relationship with Blue Peter and that his on-screen persona was switched off as soon as he left the set.

I recently watched his HMS Ganges mast climb on you tube. He seemed utterly fearless.

Yep, agree. Great memories and great TV. He had a huge and positive influence on a whole generation.

I always had him down as being younger than Valerie Singleton (80) and Peter Purves (78)

(shudder) that Nelson's Column climb, even Fred Dibnah would have blanched at that.

Sad news. But a little odd that I've had BBC breakfast on for an hour this morning and no mention of it.....

An item on website from 21 hours ago. Was it all on telly last night? I did not see news last night.

Not seen that before - thanks for the link. At least he had plimsolls on - that climb up Nelson's Column was done in 'office' shoes (but at least he had a raincoat on - very important that).

John Noakes - the reason to watch Blue Peter. Legend.

Saw this news yesterday. Very sad, as was the fact that he was suffering from and with advanced Alzheimer's. He's about the first tv presenter that I remember from childhood. It's difficult to explain today how important Blue Peter was for our generation of kids.

RIP John. I hope that wherever you've gone Shep will be waiting for you.
