Four countries cut links with Qatar
Discussion
This is rather amusing
http://maldivesindependent.com/politics/trade-with...
"Asked about alleged Saudi influence, Attorney General Anil insisted that the move was prompted by the Maldives’ zero-tolerance policy on terrorism and extremism. The cabinet advised the president to sever ties with Qatar following extensive deliberations, he added."
and nothing to do with
"Since assuming office in November 2013, President Yameen has fostered close ties with Saudi Arabia and China, visiting the kingdom thrice and securing loans to finance an ambitious infrastructure scale-up. In March, Yameen announced a forthcoming US$10 billion investment from Saudi Arabia, prompting fears that Faafu atoll or parts of it could be sold to the Saudi royal family."
Of course Bahrain is backing it as the do government terror on it's own down trodden majority and are only in power because Saudi sent in the tanks to prop up the regime.
Not quite sure how many attacks sponsored by Qatar the Maldives have suffered this year? Is it less than one?

I've been in Qatar 7 years now. I leave for good next week.
I find it interesting reading what people on the outside think is going on and what they interpret things/stories to mean.
First of all, Qatar Airways is hardly suffering from a perspective of flight disruptions if you're transiting through it so don't worry.
It is true people are a bit nervous as we're in uncharted territory here but the worst we have to suffer is a lack of produce from Saudi, that includes Nappies and Baby formula, a lot of kids are going to be suffering in a very short space of time if this blockade keeps on.
This is almost certainly a political power play as opposed to "something looming on the hill that Saudi and UAE want nothing to do with".
Saudi and the UAE are looking to castrate Qatar who have long had more influence in the region than they've both been happy with.
Locally concrete and steel come mostly from the UAE and Saudi, with ties cut 2022 projects will suffer within the month, the MAJOR issue on construction projects is the recalling of Egyptian Citizens from Qatar, they are the backbone of the Construction Industry and if they leave in the next couple of weeks a lot of projects are going to be in BIG trouble.
The big deal for Qatar is if they react to Trumps accusations and kick out the Americans (which would be a Saudi/UAE wet dream) as Qatar would basically be defenseless while sat on all that gas.
"tin foil hat" - while Saudi and UAE wouldn't invade, they could support a coup from within and install a ruling family that is of their own. It is also possible, like in the recent Bahrain troubles that Saudi could send in its Military to "stabilize the area for the sake of the region" if a coup happens. It wasn't so long ago that the Military and all Government officials got a 100% payrise within a day of lots of rumours of a coup attempt. Nothing ever became public other than the news of the payrise though.
The feeling among me and my friends is for the most part its posturing and Saudi and the UAE can achieve their goals by getting Qatar back in line with their views by continuing to apply pressure passively.

Cheers, I don't think there is anything to worry about from our side. We're off to live in NZ in a week and it'll take a lot longer than a week to get to a point where things could flare up.First the Yanks would need to be kicked out then the Saudis would need to mobilize.. at the first sign the Al Udeid base is being cleared I'll have my family on the first thing with wings out of here but I really REALLY don't think it'll extend beyond the measures we've seen implemented already.

How can a society go so downhill so quickly?
Although some say the vast division of wealth is one of the drivers fundamentalism in the region...?

it can't last long. with the land border closed and key shipping routes easily blocked they will have to yield to whatever demands are being made by their GCC neighbours through the back channels.
