Isolated case or tip of an iceberg?
I would imagine thousands did it (mainly students) but most were not so blatant in their boasting about it.
It's fairly obvious what happened, you only need to look at what happened in Canterbury as to the widespread abuse of the voting system.
If it's so obvious why did Canterbury City Council decided not to investigate?
No idea, perhaps your question is best directed at the City Council, as they don't think it was an issue despite the feelings locally.

The government plans to trial compulsory voter ID at the local elections in May and the usual suspects are whining about it.

I would imagine what with all the hoops people are being put through to claim benefits etc the ‘vulnerable’ will have no problems mustering appropriate documentation to prove identity.

So basically, asking for ID is discriminating against idiots.

And discriminating against idiots is discriminating against Labour voters.

Have I got that right?

It’s a problem every single year in Bradford at every election, be it local, national. Postal vote fraud seem to be a popular choice, or the gathering up of constituents and taking them en-masse to vote.

I particularly like the candidate who offered on his election leaflets , free solar panels, for everyone when he was elected.

Ironic given that if you want to vote in labour party internal elections you'll need to prove you're a member using not only photo ID, but also proof of your address via a recent utility bill to check you've not moved to another area.

It's doubly ironic that Lammy is kicking off about this, when the details of the above are on his labour party website.

We should not be making people jump through hoops to participate in democracy.

What is it about NP&E that make so many here want to add so much red tape and bureaucracy to previously straightforward things?

Why can't they take a bit of pride in their country and how their democratic system works?

Already the case.

Photo ID won't stop this.

What problem are we trying to solve, again?

Will this ID stuff apply in any way to postal voting? I'd imagine the influence of some students double voting is potentially miniscule compared to the number of people (potentially dead) having their postal vote filled in by their 'community leader'.

Which candidate was that? I assume he was reported to the Electoral Commission?

I'd say you're more or less bang on with that - given how the guardian have put it.

Voter fraud is not democracy, so I am happy to see May introduce these measures.

How do I find out if my community leader has been voting on my behalf? (Or for that matter, who they are?)

Don’t worry, you’ve not missed anything. Only adults can vote, currently. HTH

Fantastic irony! has anyone pointed this out to Lammy?

If i want to open a bank account, receive benefits apply for a loan/mortgage etc then I have to prove who I am. If you want to let a house to someone you have check their identity. Voting should be no different.

I dont get the point around disenfranchising voters? In this day and age how many people dont have a passport, driving licence, or even a utility bill to somehow prove who they say they are?

Do Labour somehow claim that there voters dont have simple photo ID?

Because it's predominantly Labour voters who can't drive, don't travel abroad nor pay their own bills is the obvious conclusion smile

I'm surprised we've allowed the most important part of democracy to go on without proper checks that the person voting has a right to vote for this long. But then I am more right wing than Mussolini.

Bring in id cards. We can use them for people who want to opt out of organ donation, to replace driving licensee's, passports all sorts of stuff.

Poor people, why bother paying for a driving license or passport when you can't afford to drive or go on foreign holidays? Since when has a utility bill been photo id?

It will disenfranchise people, handily the type of people who wouldn't vote tory anyway. I wonder what the May's reasoning for this was.
