As regards fireman failing to spot the secondary fire (IF they did) - In my line of work as a contractor in large factories before we start any work we often have to obtain a "hot works permit" if we're likely to do any welding, grinding etc. part of which is an agreement that the designated "fire watcher" ie. usually me, remains on site for two hours after any hot work has finished. Just wondered what real firemens procedure is?
I don't think they failed to spot it as such. When they were in a position to see it, they saw it. I'll bet they couldn't see it from inside and wouldn't be looking for the outside of the building (a building that should not be combustible according to their training), to be on fire anyway.Munter said:

Truly surprised!
They seem to have soo many redundancies and protocols that it should never come down to one individual saying; "wrap it up here chaps, job jobbed!"

Crews believed they had put out the fire at the London high-rise and were astonished to see flames rising up the side of the building, new reports have claimed.
Shortly after dealing with the fridge fire early last Wednesday, firefighters were telling residents that it was out, BBC Panorama reported"
The "secondary fire" seems to have happened well within the time span my procedures would allow me to leave the initial fire.
Just asking what their procedure states.

As we get further and further into the minutiae of the fire and responsibility, and more and more into the inevitable greed that has followed, surely, if this was a case of a fire in one flat the tenant would lose out if he/she had not insured the contents. All I can see is that this circumstance multiplies by 124 or whatever the number is.
If anything is going to befall you, you owe to your family to try and make sure it happens when you're part of a crowd.lowdrag said:
...the insurers wriggling they paid out for the contents of my wine cellar at current values, not cost price ten years before - because I had proof, both in receipts (which would have been lost in the fire in the case of Grenfell) and with the supplier of the rather good wines, plus the supporting evidence of my bank statements.
I would guess that there aren't going to be too many claims for "contents of wine cellar" from Grenfell.https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jul/22/ev...

So unspecified work has been done to rectify the risks has been completed and it's safe to move back in, but the independent report on the works won't be ready until next month...More than 100 residents evacuated from a north London housing estate in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire are said to be refusing to move back until they receive further assurances about its safety.
Surely the report which confirms it's safe must be ready before they stop paying for alternative accommodation?

"we want an independent professional body with no ties to local authorities to make an inspection.”More than 100 residents evacuated from a north London housing estate in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire are said to be refusing to move back until they receive further assurances about its safety.
" completion of safety works it said were signed off by London fire brigade"
So London fire brigade is not independent then?

A massive can of worms has been opened with this tragedy.
In reality no house in the auK should have wooden floors joists Actually ovens hobs etc should be commercial use only.
Also a key one a legal requirement for every UK household to rewire every 10 years likewise sprinklers in every property

Think we need to find out what contaminants are suspected and if the London fire brigade are classed as competent to de-contaminate... " completion of safety works it said were signed off by London fire brigade"
