The landlord isn't the council, it's KCTMO (Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation) which manages 10,000 properties on behalf of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Similar organisations exist all over the UK so the ramifications of this incident could be very widespread.

http://www.kctmo.org.uk

where is written:

"In 2002 KCTMO took over the responsibility for major capital works from the Council to access extra resources and funding to enable KCTMO to bring the properties up to the Decent Homes Standard."

Hmmm.....

It's the stuff of nightmares.

Heads are going to roll, surely. Sounds like this 'Grenfell Action Group' will have a mountain of evidence against the management company. Shame on them.
I think you used the wrong phrase....
No, I didn't. I just didn't use it in the sarcastic way that it is quite often used.

I find it really sad that all the finger pointing has started before the fire is even out.

Horrible thing to wake up and see on the news, feelings go out to those caught up in it.

Part of me is not that surprised, the number of times I see a fire engineer report value engineer out things like sprinkler systems and fire compartmentation with little resistance from those signing the building off.

An apartment block should not ever allow fire to spread like that, each flat should be compartmented from every other and the common areas for at least 1/2 hour (more likely an hour or even 2 in a building of this height)

It sounds like there was a serious lack of fire stopping in the building which again doesn't surprise me, I oversaw £1m worth of retro fitting fire stopping measures, collars around services and cavity barriers to a hotel after the main contractor (one of the largest in the country) didn't bother installing any at all.

Why would you put inflammable cladding on a building in the first place?
Because they're a profiteering bottomfeeder who will hopefully go to jail for multiple counts of corporate manslaughter. There's no way the cladding should burn as readily as that. Horrific to behold.

Is the problem with the buildings or the lack of procedures during a fire? People were told to remain in rooms etc.
With concrete walls and floors, and fire resistant doors, fire should not be able to spread, theroretically.....

But if the outside of the building is blazing, upvc windows will melt and in goes the fire.

And if the rubbish and furniture reported months ago is still clogging the central stairs and corridors then it will be like a large Bunsen burner inside eventually.

The news is already reporting a damning report from the flats association stating there WILL be a disaster soon.

A long long time ago I looked at renting a flat in a London block.......I decided I did not want to live in a block for this very reason having been influenced by the movie Towering Inferno. It was a good flat and I kicked myself for ages for being stupid.

I do hope there are as few fatalities as we can hope for.

I've seen this on a new build office block in the Philippines, and it looked like and felt exactly like expanded polystyrene. And we all set fire to a piece of that when we were kids and watched it burn like crazy....

It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders.

It is our conviction that a serious fire in a tower block or similar high density residential property is the most likely reason that those who wield power at the KCTMO will be found out and brought to justice!
Did anyone read this and think self fulfilling prophecy?

Fingers crossed for minimal fatalities.

Concerned that reports seem to indicate only 50 people taken to hospital for treatment. Hopefully a lot of others got out without needing medical attention as the alternative is horrific.

One of the eyewitnesses right now on BBC news (who lives on the 4th floor) said that his neighbours fridge exploded and caused the fire.

The Grenfell Action Group predict that it won’t be long before the words of this blog come back to haunt the KCTMO management and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those in authority know how long and how appallingly our landlord has ignored their responsibility to ensure the heath and safety of their tenants and leaseholders. They can’t say that they haven’t been warned!

Goes back a while too....

One witness on TV just said he had seen "40 or 50 people die in front of him" :-(

Even if we get one fatality it will be sad, but this looks utterly grim! :-(

That's what I thought. There should be many more.

This is really horrific. Just imagine being caught above the fire. What would you do? It is the stuff of nightmares yet it is real.
