In a courtesy car this morning. It was tuned to Radio 1. At 11 a.m. the BBC declared a 1 minute silence 'to remember the victims of the Finsbury Park mosque van attack.'
Whilst the person who died and those injured obviously have my sympathy I think it utterly ridiculous the BBC expect the country to come to a halt to remember that event. The millions who died in WW1 defending this country is one thing... .
Have to admit not much makes my jaw hit the floor..but I was well and truly gobsmacked.

Someone was throwing a strop on here not long ago that the Saudi football team didn't hold a minutes silence for the victims of the Manchester terror attack. Which is most ridiculous?

They're both completely unnecessary. "Throwing a strop" isn't nice BTW.

Absolute Radio also observed it. I assume because of this - https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-to-observe-a...

I absolutely disagree. The context was that SA were playing Australia, and in that particular incident Australians were killed. I can understand the Ozzie's wanting to pay their respects. For the SA team to ignore that and go about their warm up is poor at best.

Is that some sports event? I'm worrying people are losing perspective.

It’s trial time.

“A man who drove a van into a crowd near a mosque in a terrorist act intended to kill as many Muslims as possible after becoming “brainwashed” by extremist rightwing propaganda and watching a BBC drama about the Rochdale grooming scandal, a jury has heard.”

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jan/22/da...

There was another right wing lunatic in the news a few weeks ago for doing something similar - got away quite lightly with only a 33 week sentence.

“A Britain First supporter who drove at a curry restaurant owner after saying “I’m going to kill a Muslim” is to walk free after serving his prison sentence while on remand.

The Old Bailey heard that Marek Zakrocki, 48, also gave a Nazi salute and shouted “white power” before driving his van at Kamal Ahmed outside Spicy Night restaurant in Harrow, north-west London, on 23 June last year – the first anniversary of the Brexit vote.

He told a police officer while in his van: “I’m going to kill a Muslim. I’m doing it for Britain. This is how I’m going to help the country. You people cannot do anything.”

It's starting to become clear how he was radicalised by online hate preachers.

From the DM, for those who won't trust any source that they assume will put a lefty spin on events like this:

Daily Mail said:
May 16 - Osborne watches Three Girls, a BBC drama about grooming in Rochdale. His ex-partner said the programme was a catalyst for him becoming 'obsessed' with Muslims.

June 3 - Osborne set up his Twitter account and on the same day he received a direct message from Jayda Fransen.

June 6 - He searched for 'which party wants to bring back the death penalty'.

June 9 - Osborne received an email alert from ex-EDL leader Robinson, now a commentator for The Rebel.

June 14 - He received another email from Robinson about the case of a woman in Sunderland who Robinson claims was 'raped and beaten by middle eastern migrants'.

June 17 - Osborne searched online for Tommy Robinson again. He picks up the van he used in the attack.

June 19 - Osborne alleged drove onto a pavement in Finsbury Park. Mr Ali died from multiple injuries at the scene at 1.04am.

The note he wrote the day before he carried out the attack (from the DM link above) - not difficult to see the Britain First and Tommy Robinson influences there.

And what do you believe should be done about it? We already have hate speech laws and if Tommy Robinson was guilty of such actions he would be prosecuted.

All I see are mainly factual accounts of what has happened.

I can give you a link with all the Islamic fundamentalists killers the Korean and Islam. Would you like someone done about that?

Hate speech laws like the ones currently being used to prosecute Jayda Fransen? Yep, we have them and they've been used against quite a few Islamic extremists preachers.

The Sunderland rape claim would be the one which the CPS declined to prosecute due to lack of evidence and the alleged victim refused to cooperate with the police when they requested she review the details?

This case isn't much different from several of those involving Islamic extremists - all involve gullible individuals who believe hate filled bile spouted by twisted 'patriots' (either of this country or an Islamic caliphate).

Pathetic actions like those of Britain First, Knights Templar International, etc, just serve to polarise opinions and make it almost impossible to sensibly discuss any real problems with some in this country who claim to follow Islam.

Interesting that Fransen seems to have initiated direct contact (via Twitter DM). Very different to Robinson's email which sounds like it was just one of his typical posts to his mailing list.

Agreed. Osborne's note, left at the scene attacked Jeremy Corbyn, Sadiq Khan & Lily Allen, all of whom are regular hate figures on the pages of this very website. The ultimate expression of that hatred is where that man is today, whatever side of the fence one stands on, hatred is a corrosive emotion that leads to a blind alley.

I ask again then, what would you like done about it?
New laws?
Media bans on certain groups and people? Even if they haven't broken any current law's

Literal put our fingers in our ears and pretend there isn't a problem or do we look at the cause of this hate and try and tackle that honest and fairly?
