In all due seriousness, my 8 year old daughter asked me if she was pretty compared to one of the contestants on X Factor not long ago. Broke my heart that at 8 years old she was already trying to benchmark herself against women on TV in the £1000 outfits and hours & hours in make up. Hard to explain it to her, and she quickly shrugged it off, but it upset me more then she'll ever know.

Way society is, but until that moment I hadn't given it much thought; but seeing her ernest, slightly puzzled look floored me. .

Yep, I do agree. It is still something I am paying closer attention to then she will ever realise, instilling self confidence and trying to counteract the societal view of what she should look, dress and act like.

Children go through this one way or another, it's as you put it that seems wrong - girls aspire to be pretty/show off a bit o' leg, boys aspire to be good at something?
