Welcome to the Age of Stupid. Coming to a ballot box near you.
Spot on. The level of stupid witnessed on the likes of Facebook is horrifying. The idiocracy is here.
It went downhill ever since they removed the need to have a university email account. hehe

Just took a look at Charlie's Army USA Facebook page. Incredible. I'm amazed at the levels of stupidity.

OMG as they say on TOWIE - when on Earth was that posted?? Please tell me it was weeks ago and not in the last few days??

Whilst I am as guilty as the next man (well apart from Welshbeef obviously smile ) of posting drivel at times and especially if I have been on a 'long lunch' or recovering from a Lions' breakfast, what goes through somebody's head to make them post something so thick, idiotic, uninformed and nonsensical as that utter cr4p? Unfortunately as many on here have said, this is more a way of life now rather than the minority I fear....

And the more it gets tolerated and 'allowed' the more it becomes the norm.

We are all doomed frown

I see occasional stupid on my facebook feed; if you're seeing loads of stupid, it possibly says more about your on-line friends.

Although I did just make the mistake of checking out the Charlies Army USA page. Quite amazingly scary levels of stupid and tinfoil hat wearing going on there.

There's your mistake, fb now thinks you want to see more of the Charlies Army type thing...

All those dumb posts on social media only serve to confirm what a wonderful decision I made a few years back when I cancelled my Facebook account.

It is truly full of moronic thinking creatures.

I haven't been following this too closely (for the sake of my stomach), but I thought they were fighting the hospice thing? Well, until the Judge made his decision yesterday and said there would be no further hearings - effectively telling them it was over.
My understanding is that they wanted him at home even though this wasn't actually technically possible (they live in a first floor flat, the kit is too big to get through the door, up the stairs, etc).

They then went to court to ask that this be allowed anyway.

The court said no and that he is going to a Hospice and that they have until 1200 today to work out a care plan with GOSH. If they don't come to an agreement by 1200 then he is going to a Hospice regardless and they will withdraw life support shortly after that.

The parents accept that he is now going to a hospice but now want to spend a week there with him (requiring a specific doctor which isn't available) rather than a few hours. This would conveniently get him to his first birthday. GOSH are against this as they believe he is in constant pain 24x7 and this should have been ended months ago at the first hearing.

Err...that, not how average works.

In a group of 10 people, 1 could have an IQ of 110 and 9 could have an IQ of just 10. The average person would have an IQ of 20 but in that case 90% are dimmer than that.

In another group of 10 people, 9 could have an IQ of 100 and 1 could have an IQ of 10. Then the average IQ would be 91 but only 10% are dimmer than that.

Cancelled mine 6 months ago and every time I see st like this I know I did the right thing.
Feels weird when I'm round someone's house and they're all buried in their phone or out at a meal and they're posting up endless selfies / pics of food.

It's more like going to the pub and getting buttonholed by the local pissed-head.

The secret is to find a pub where that is not tolerated, not stop going to the pub.

IANAmathsgeek, but I think it depends upon the shape of the distribution curve i.e. a plot of no. of people on the y axis v. IQ on the x axis.

If it is a 'normal' Gaussian distribution curve for IQ (and I think it is for the whole population) then rm999's statement is in fact correct. It is a separate matter of course to debate if you agree that 'the average person isn't wonderfully bright'. smile

Your worked example is OK for 10 people with highly skewed values Twig, doesn't work when N = 60,000,000 on a Gaussian distribution.

Agreed, but when talking about the dimness of the general populous, it's important to be spot on.

It's a normal distribution curve. Only about 15% of the population have an IQ below 85.

It's not a new phenomenon at all though
Indeed it's not. But it does appear to be more prevalent and, as mentioned in other posts, social media seems to be playing a big part in that.

I can't remember the figures but there were some ridiculous numbers quoted around the time of the general election and, prior to that, Trump's victory regarding the percentage of people who thought Facebook was the best place to read 'news' and find out 'facts' about candidates and policies.

And then we get a plum like Gove stating that 'everyone is sick of experts', just to add a bit more justification for the Facebook dwellers.

Take's me back.....

Hey diddle diddle, the median’s the middle,
You add then divide for the mean.
The mode is the one that you see the most,
And the range is the difference between.

The #CharliesArmy group on Twitter leave me in a dilemma. It's counter intuitive, but I can't help thinking you need to be quite clever to squeeze so much fking stupidity into 140 characters.

But isn't IQ Normally distributed with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 115? (I think there are a few slightly different measures, but the Normal distribution holds for each of them). And a feature of the Normal distribution is that mean equals median.

So in a large enough group of people, rovermorris999 is completely correct.
