My dad has had a bad run of luck recently and compounding that has ended up in hospital. He's back now but feeling worse for wear so I've come home for a few days to help out and provide a bit of company and support.

One of the things I was looking to do was sort out this weed area in his back garden which has been getting worse for a number of years.

I was thinking it just needs completely digging out, spraying with a load of killer then fresh soil?
He problem I have is I haven't the first clue when it comes to gardening, what type of soil, how much and what to do with it!!!

I think the area would look nice with some planters but obviously needs some attention first.

Hopefully this picture works

Gloves on and pull them up.

Once you've got them all out fork the area over and put your new plants/shrubs in.

Weed control fabric (cut holes for the plants), and some sort of mulch (bark/chippings) over the top and it should be nice and low maintenance for him.

It shouldn't take too long, particularly if you enlist the help of the bird hanging around on the phone in the back of the clio.

Thanks, would you not say it's worth completely renewing the soil then?

Unless the soil is particularly bad (e.g. Full of rocks) just dig through a decent amount of manure / compost
