Planes can land even closer to the beach now at SXM
That's the one where they hang off the fence for the jet wash?
The airport is out of action for now, but possibly more significantly, the port itself has been badly damaged rendering it out of action too. It's going to be difficult to get help over to them in the immediate future.

If the storm stays on track between Cuba and the Bahamas, without making any other landfall, I think its going to have a bad affect on Southern Florida.

The waters between it and Florida grow warmer and warmer. Its not a great sign for it dissipating much. Although the forecasters seem to think it will drop back to a 4 before impact with Florida.

I wouldn't want to be in the Bahamas in the next couple of days....

I was on USVI and Sing Maarten last year, and apart from some pockets of wealth, it's mainly wooden shacks. Has everyone been evacuated? Are underground bunkers standard over there? How are people stranded on remote islands supposed to survive this thing?!
The same way they have for 100's or 1000's of years. Surely you aren't dumb enough to think this is 'new' thing for these places rolleyes

French relief flights have landed at St Martin - the runway is well protected from falling debris because of the sterile zone around it .

But for 100's of years their livelihoods have not been largely dependent on tourism. Without marinas, restaurants, hotels, electricity etc. their incomes have been dashed, as well as their homes. Long term survival will be an issue.

When Cozumel was wiped out 15 years ago or so, it took years to rebuild it. And that was cat 4. These effected islands are now fked for years, maybe longer.

If you had spent any significant time in these places you would understand that. They are not just sugar plantations anymore. rolleyes

Yes, but the beach is normally on the other side of the road.

Weather Channel is strongly warning to be prepared for exactly this to happen.

Seems to be a focused storm as I have family in Antigua (not far from Barbuda) and they have seen minimal damage. Structures that wouldn't survive a winter in the U.K. are largely untouched in Antigua.
I spent nearly three weeks in Antigua this summer and had a fantastic holiday, it's a great place to stay for a while thumbup

I'm thankful the island hasn't been hit badly and hope the others in the path of this stty storm are as lucky yes
I've friends who live there, they bugged out to their place in South Carolina last week whilst the going was good.
Fingers crossed they return to things much as they left them and my thoughts are with all those who started with very little and now have even less.

A lady was blown over and killed there by jet blast only a few weeks ago.
She was blown onto the rocks frown

To be fair, why anyone with a half a brain would want to stand at the arse end of a large aircraft with 40,000lb's of thrust being thrown at them is beyond me yes

I've only stood behind the short haul twin jets. It really is quite the buzz.

This is why discussions on this forum get so tedious sometimes.

It's a terrible event for those who are affected by it - whether it's the biggest hurricane in the area ever or not.
Totally agree

There's a lot of weird on this. Storms H, J , K from both years. Also, the furthest west in both is the youngest hurricane. How odd.

It certainly looks pretty bracing out there, makes you thankful we live on this fairly damp but mild rock.
