Explosion that could split a plastic bucket?
It might not have split the bucket but it looks to have destroyed the carrier bag!!

To be fair, we don't know what it looked like 'pre-event', but it definitely looks sinister.

You see contractors and builders carrying all sorts with them on the early morning tubes in the morning, LU staff never challenge anyone on contents. Maybe an unfortunate combination of products which have reacted or a failed device. Not good.

Better picture, from Reddit although originally looks to be Twitter:

Could be, they just showed a zoomed in shot of that on the news.

I cant imagine the mindset of stopping to take a photo in that situation!

OK, now 100% sinister. Bomb or trial run...?

Extremely worrying. That looks like what everyone suspects it is.

People saying 'odd target'... you have no idea what the target is. If this is a bomb, it's failed to detonate, and it quite possibly cooked off early or unintentionally, there is no indication that the current location is the ultimate target.

Additionally, I'd be worried that this is one of multiple devices, and I'd b worried that there was other targets.

Or it's some kids physics experiment gone wrong.

Wiring looks sinister. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but that looks very dodgy indeed. I'm guessing DIY bomb.

That was the point I was making. It clearly hasn't fully exploded.

Why would you have light bulbs in a homemade bomb?
Hopefully just an art project gone wrong due to a shorted battery or something. Those cable crimp connectors are hopeless unless you use the proper tool!

Indicate when it is armed? Or only copper wire available was from fairy lights (less suspicious than the local DIY store) ?
Or even to make the device look less threatening?

Bulbs are used as a simple detonator , the lit one could be a there to check the circuit , i read this someplace ( ages ago ) .

Very dodgy looking device, should be able to track the owner down rather than he/she being a thin veneer on a train ceiling.

Thankfully it doesn't appear to have worked whatever the device was.
