Sid James would be the Major - demoted to the other ranks of course.
He can still be the Major - he did a passable toff as Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond in Khyber - probably the finest film ever made. "Where's the Memsahib?"
"Gone off with the Khazi of Kalabar, Sir. He's taken her up t' Jacksi"

The white Anglo-Saxon side of this country was only ever a passing phase anyway. The white Celtic side was here long before those Saxon interlopers - not to mention all those European Italo/Romano/Celts etc.
Those bloody Saxons really ruined this place.
Some of us that named this place 'Britain' are still going Eric!!! They have hugely popular Brythonic names like Gareth, Bryn, Rhys, Ioan etc But of course they don't figure in these results! Bloody BBC Those bloody Saxons really ruined this place.

That BBC link where we all started - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-41160596There's a tool in there to query the details, and see how many sprogs were burdened with a particular name last year.
Gareth - 12
Bryn - 32
Rhys - 390
Ioan - 88
I find myself idly wondering what proportion of those "Ioan"s will grow up speaking Welsh, and how many Romanian, though...

Dont forget the axes and chariots with scythes on the wheels-very handy in Colchester traffic jams back then, and probably a good idea now as an optional extra on an AudiTo return to the thread ......
Mo is the most popular name in our top two cities.
does this have any meaningful implication for future demographics?
If we assume that the recent wave of immigration takes at least another generation for their birth rates to reduce to "our" level. Could we see our two largest cities having 10, 20 30% of their male population being called Mo ?
Names come and go with fashion we have lost a lot of old names, but this change is not driven by fashion.
Whether anybody cares is of course another matter.

Jones is one of the most common surnames in the UK. Does that mean we've had a Welsh population explosion?
Ironically that's an English name imposed on the Welsh to suppress their nationalism. Genuine Welsh names are craziness like Gwenwynwyn ab Owain Cyfeiliog, not Jones or Evans.Breadvan72 said:

Also, no culture is fixed. It is historically daft to suggest that one particular cultural group which happens to have occupied a particular bit of land has some innate right to remain the dominant culture in that locality. Cultures are, however, robust. Western culture has existed in a slowly changing form for millennia. It shows no sign of going away. It is the most successful form of culture known to have existed. It has produced the best solutions to human problems, by inventing things such as democracy, the rule of law, and capitalism. It is also very militant and armed to the teeth.

You most be the biggest supporter of colonialism and empire I've ever come across. You most see the how the aborigines and native Americans have been treated in the past as totally fair and reasonable. It is historically daft to suggest that one particular cultural group which happens to have occupied a particular bit of land has some innate right to remain the dominant culture. The white Anglo Saxon Christian culture is now doomed in this country. Replaced by God knows what but its almost certain to lead to secular wars and massive social problems. But that could just be me with my tinfoil hat.
