Furthermore, if you went by the news footage, you'd think that Gaza was a pile of rubble. Of course, Hamas actually operate terror operations near to the border (because, even then, their rockets have problems getting over the border!), the damage is localised.

If by that you mean that Jewish culture is inherently about enterprise and business and so on you might be in danger of runnning some stereotypes yourself. Not every Jewish person is an entrepreneur. Judaism isn't inconsistent with forms of socialism. Look at Kibbutzim, for example.
Like most things in life, things have moved on in the world of Kibbutz, whilst founded on a mix of socialist and zionist principles, they do need money to keep the way of life going.The one I worked at back in the early 90's had a 4*Hotel, dairy/fish/agriculture farming operation, and two factories making small electrical goods. The Kibbutz down the road even had a big water theme park thing.
They still lived a collective way of life. e.g. You wouldn't own a car personally on that Kibbutz, but you would have access to 60+ vehicles when you needed.
