It's a slippery slope when you start banning things for everyone just because a few idiots are unable to handle the freedom.
The stats would tend to demonstrate that it's far from just 'a few idiots'. Also, I've not actually suggested banning anything. I've just asked why there can't be more control.
I must have misunderstood you then wink

Are there not enough threads on that subject to satisfy you?

In the UK there are a few hoops to jump through should you want a shotgun licence, quite a few more should you want a firearms licence.
Handguns are banned, except for civil authorities.
Incidentally I am not overly comfortable about police using handguns, inaccurate and easily discharged in panic shooting.
I'd rather they were utterly illegal within our borders.

I didn't specify what the privilege was though, did I? My build up to that (not altogether serious) statement concerned greater controls on the amount of ammo a 'gun hobbyist' might have access to.

I've missed something. Where do you live that you need ?

And lets face it - AR15's aren't needed for vermin control, no way. They are owned for fun, because they are fun to shoot, the control, the power. Heavily liked because of price, performance, easily customisable. The people who say they need these for home defence are exactly the type of people who shouldn't have them.
Not here they are not but in parts of the states they are.
Colleague of mine lives in Florida, he has a AR15 plus numerous other types of weapon, as I discovered when I stopped at his pad after a conference. He owns a 300 acre plot which I would describe it as a nature reserve.

He insisted that if I wanted to take a walk around his yard on my own that I was armed, and gave me a glock to use after a 5 minute training on how to use! if I encountered any critters, I enquired what kind of critters and he showed me Trail cam shots of: Bear, Puma, Panther, Wild pig and Snakes, Gators although he said he was only scared of the wild pigs and neighbours who feed gators.

I went on a wild hog hunt a few days later with his neighbours and the AR15 was the weapon of choice.

PS this wasn't yee haa, bunch of rooting tooting banjo playing hicks, my colleague is a eminent professor in his field and the others were all professionals.
Apologies for the delay - been working.

Oh yes I understand the gun culture. As I said previously the AR15 is a fun weapon to use, on a range etc. Can't understand those who need it for 'home defence' or hunting, although I'll admit it's brilliantly designed to kill. On the hog hunt was it spray and pray or individual shots?

And yes, I've been at a friends work BBQ on someones homestead outside Tampa where the empty beer bottle/tins were set up as targets and all sorts of weapons emerged. The pistol shooters were fun, watching them miss a lot at 5 yards. They were amazed when we had a go that we shot at 20-25 yards.

UK is very small and isolated compared to the rest of Europe and USA, so much easier to keep gun free. Handgrenades are illegal for everyone except the army, but here in Sweden we have at least one blast a week. AK47s are used a couple of times a week, they are also banned for everyone except the army and police.

There is no easy fix for the shootings.

Perhaps, but fortunately not in the adult world or everything from cars to paracetamol to package holidays to Ibiza would be banned.
So do you think the US could start small. How about allowing the records to be computerised and not allowing modifications to weapons that increased fire rate or magazine capacity from manufacturers spec.

Although talking about "the privilege" on a thread where guns are the main subject...

I don't have the stats at hand, but I believe there are around 300 million guns in the US, imagine the ammo people have stocked. Getting rid of that is pretty much impossible.

Finite stocks would be... finite.

Finite in 10, 20, 50,100 years?

Depends on the number of 'sprees' I imagine.

So we are no closer to saving lives today then.

Besides, for some guns, you can make your own ammo.

Can anyone confirm that the shooter has 2 convictions for child molestation in the late 80's/early 90's?
He seems to have at least 4 known aliases which is making checking records lots of
fun.

Why would handgun armed British police lose the plot, when their EU counterparts don't?

The public records are a right wing nutter site?
Because that's where I've been looking.

hmm, in absence of better motive for killing so many people could it be that he hated country music THAT much?!

"Mr. Paddock made two complaints to the hotel about noise coming from his downstairs neighbors: Albert Garzon, a restaurant owner visiting from San Diego, and his wife and friends.

Mr. Garzon, who was staying in 31-135, directly beneath Mr. Paddock, said security guards knocked on his door around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday and asked him to turn down his music, country songs.

When he asked where the complaint was coming from, pointing out that the nearest rooms on either side were far away, the security guard said, “It’s the guest above you.”

They turned the music down, but had another visit from different security guards half an hour later.

The man had called to complain again.

Mr. Garzon turned the music off. It wasn’t until the early hours of Monday that Mr. Garzon realized Mr. Paddock had been the complainer.

“I looked up and I could see his curtain flapping in the wind,” he said."

So I guess those New York cops a few years ago were intending to hit all those bystanders (10?) and miss the suspect?

It was being reported last night that he'd had hotel suites over looking two other music festivals in recent months. One was Lollapolooza (sp?), can't remember the other.

Seems to me, huge crowds gathered in open spaces were what he was looking for i.e. he's not going to get into an NFL game with 23 guns. There can't be many events where 20,000+ people gather in the open.
