Durham sounds dire - aping the worst aspects of Oxbridge (which have mostly died out at the real Oxbridge), but without the academic excellence.
We have a relationship with Durham - somebody who worked for us as an 18 year old studied there (is in her final year of four now) and got us in touch with their careers people. We've recruited two people from there, both of whom are good. I was up there for a careers event a few weeks back and met a lot of students. They seem normal, bright kids from a range of backgrounds, and it struck me as a nice place to spend a few years. When it comes to VC salaries you can blame Brexit

Applications were down at Bath this year and I suspect the same will follow with Southampton for the 2018 intake
Students have to pay a lot of money and are now seeking value for that and will vote with their feet

I had a relationship with someone from Durham....To be honest it seems like a fairly good place to study but half their students would have rather gone to Oxbridge and the Oxbridge dross take particular delight in 'doing Durham down' as they know it.
Bottom line turns out almost as many academically gifted tossers as the boat racers do, but with a slightly larger chip on their shoulder and slightly less braying.
Very often ex alumni will let you know that they went to Durham on their business cards, this is only slightly sadder than those from Oxford or Cambridge that chose to do the same.
That said they do not tend to have to let you know which university they attended within the first 10 seconds of meeting them, unlike those from Oxford or Cambridge.
Actually, the only peculiar thing we found was how many of the people we wanted to talk to further refused the offer of free booze because they had to be on the river at some ungodly hour the next morning. What's happened to students?
Also, the locals all appear to be hobbits. As a shortarse myself, it felt a bit like Hong Kong did.

Q: How do you know that someone went to Oxford or Cambridge?
A: Their parents will tell you.
Oldies and goodies...such as the one about why semen is white and urine is yellow...so that Oxford students can tell whether they're coming or going.A: Their parents will tell you.
Yes the 'honours' can be reversed to taste (figuratively speaking!).
Why are people so fixated on the Russell universities anyway?
They can get the same degree and the same grade from one of the ex polytechnics, if they work hard enough. And at a much lower living cost due to cheaper rents.
Too many people are looking for an excuse to fail at what they ARE doing.

The quality of the education is totally different. They can get the same degree and the same grade from one of the ex polytechnics, if they work hard enough. And at a much lower living cost due to cheaper rents.

I'd also think the college system at Oxford means the end cost to the student is less than at most universities, certainly those in the major cities.

Looking at oxbridge and one aspect, namely "the same degrees", when did the redbricks and polyunis get permission to award Cantab and Oxon degrees?
For my particular degree Oxbridge wouldn't have any higher status than the place I went to. Some universities are better for certain subjects.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
