I'd also thing the coege system at Oxford
i take it you went to an ex poly ? wink
I did as it happens!
My poly turned into a university when I was actually there - obviously because my massive intellect dragged the average up so they had no choice.

No excuse for not checking but I can't get the hang of the keyboard on this phone.

Looking at oxbridge and one aspect, namely "the same degrees", when did the redbricks and polyunis get permission to award Cantab and Oxon degrees?
For my particular degree Oxbridge wouldn't have any higher status than the place I went to. Some universities are better for certain subjects.
Sure, I appreciate that, but it's not the point I replied to.

A close friend wanted to study a subject which neither Oxford nor Cambridge offered straight out of the undergraduate blocks, so went to St Andrews and got a first in astrophysics north of the border. It didn't have Cantab or Oxon appended.

Why are people so fixated on the Russell universities anyway?

They can get the same degree and the same grade from one of the ex polytechnics, if they work hard enough. And at a much lower living cost due to cheaper rents.

Too many people are looking for an excuse to fail at what they ARE doing.
25 years ago having a degree was the differentiator, now to get into a "top graduate" position the institution awarding the degree is the differentiator.
Chances of getting a £100k graduate job is massively increased by having attended a top university, the level of selection demands continual proof of achievement and excellence...
