I've been in & out of the gulf & the UAE for the last 25yrs. Never had a problem. It's not everybody's cup of tea & I respect that. I don;t understand why anyone would go to Dubai for a holiday. The region is frankly far more tolerant the the UK, in terms of the application of law. You really have to screw up big time to get in bother.

Don't like their way don't go. Its quite simple

From what I hear he told the other guy to go fk himself, had a scuffle/manhandled him out of the way and swore at the police when they arrived. The rest is just padding.

If you get picked up for anything when drunk [blow positive and they take you to the hospital for a blood alcohol test] and don't have an alcohol licence then that's enough to see yourself in court. If you're a tourist this means detention until the court date.

If the guy had a residency visa i doubt this would have gone beyond a night in the cells, a court appearance and a fine. However he's gone to the press with a story which goes against the police version and that of other party. The sentence is merely a reminder to tourists to keep themselves in check.

I lived and worked in the ME, Kuwait, for 3 years in the mid 80's. Also Bahrain and Jordan. Lots of gold, money, fancy buildings and utter corruption which started the moment the plane landed right through until your last day and you flew out. Police, local and national government, any official working in the Public Sector, the whole system is endemic.

Let's not kid ourselves, the only reason right thinking people are in these places is money. Hopefully you can get it, keep it, send it home and get out of these glitter covered 14th century countries unscathed.

I was lucky to do so but I have known of others less fortunate.

This. He didn’t get 3 months jail for touching someone’s arse. He got 3 months jail for being a complete dick. The UK media are pushing anti Arab propaganda rather than telling the full story. If you go abroad you should enjoy yourself but you can’t go into someone else’s country and act the and think you’ll get away with it.

People are happy to put up with a lot of things if the money is right.

Company I worked for wanted someone to go to Saudi for 6-9 months and offered it to me as I was 'between tasks'. I hummed and hawed; really didn't want to do it, it wasn't a great deal of extra money anyway, and finally told my manager I wasn't interested. "I don't blame you", he said, and found me something else to do.

Most of the police in Dubai seem to be Jordanian.

Although i dont personally agree with a lot of the hypocrisy that is present in the Gulf states i do recognise that it 'their' way of doing things.

Unfortuantly there is an arrogance from alot of people including the media that just becasue things are different over here it must be wrong or must be medievil.

As other posters have noted - if you dont like it then dont go - if your too thick to realise that behaviour most people consider 'normal' on friday nights and saturdays nghts over here wont be tolerated in the gulf then they shouldnt really take the risk of going. EVeryone knows if you want to act like a dick then you do it behind closed doors..

Of course there is always going to be people innocently caught up in the sytem but no more than what happens in other countries too.

Plenty of Egyptians as well, although the officers are predominantly local.

Tbh the dealings I've had with Dubai police have all been straight forward. I'd even say the police are helpful and friendly in the main. I'd also say if you tried to bribe them then you will regret it for a very long time.

I should probably say I've never been arrested or charged but have been held for 2 'minor' indiscretions - a firearms offence (guilty, silly me) and an accusation of attempted murder!

I know of someone who was done for dealing drugs. I won't say anything about it on a public forum but the things he went through in jail would make the daily mail rock hard with excitement.

Good job they didn't get you for something serious, like looking at them in a funny way...

In a typical tin-pot regime way, the charges against Harron have now been dropped and he's free to leave the country. BBC link

It was in Rock Bottom. I thought such behaviour was mandatory?

You have shown pictures of people protesting - although the messages on some of the placards are clearly inflamatory/ idiotic/silly and unnecessary i thought free speech and free choice is exactly what the UK says you can do...so what are they 'exactly' getting away with? Protesting?

The gulf countries openly do not allow free speech and protests are not allowed.

It is the UAEs way and their choice to do it that way as a soverign state. However they market themselves as a friendly tourist destination, when in reality there is a small but definitely non-zero chance that you will be jailed due to laws and culture which are in the stone age. I have more respect for somewhere like Iran, which is upfront about what happens if you step out of line and don't pander to western tourist brochures.

It is best not to invite attention certainly. Dubai is very much a case of expats being left alone as long as we keep things below the radar.

I'm not surprised he was pardoned tbh. This has happened with all the publicised cases involving brits in recent years.

Tourist does something stupid, gets arrested and bound over, calls tabloid press in attempt to get positive PR. Authorities do not like being shown up in this way so use the full extent of their powers in sentencing so as to send a message when the press pick it up. Sheikh mo then acquits for positive PR and because he knows the best way to keep expats coming here for work is to ensure the jails aren't full of westerners.
