I do wonder this every time someone wealthy turns up to court.

If it was looking like you were bang to rights, potential lengthy sentence, and you had $50-100 Million in the bank, why on earth wouldn’t you just disappear in a musical instrument case like the boss of Nissan?

You could have quite the life in some pleasantly warm non-extradition countries with that kind of cash.
Ego and entitlement. Two factors that may explain his behaviour towards women.

23 years of healthy living inside a federal prison for an unhealthy 67 year old man? Will he even make it to 90? This is before the State of California get hold of him.

I don't think he will make it to 68, let alone 90.

Maybe not to the victims, why not think about them? Imagine if you or maybe your child were unfortunate enough to be raped by a man who, it turns out. Has done it to hundreds of others. What sentence would you want?

I hope he makes it to 89. That way he serves 22 years and never gets out

Watching american tv shows, he will end up with the Chomos, kiddy fiddlers etc..

Not the best and even being in a gang won't help. He will get a hard time but I imagine an appeal and out in a few years once blown over.

Wonder how the sentencing will compare with Alex Salmond?

Documents released from court included:

“The documents also contain a note from Weinstein’s brother Bob, former co-chairman of the Weinstein Company. He wrote: “U deserve a lifetime achievement award for the sheer savagery and immorality and inhumanness, for the acts u have perpetrated. Oh I forgot. They were all consensual. Then what are u in rehab for? Sex addiction. Don’t think so. You wouldn’t have harassment, assault and rape charges u have now received, from 82 women for active consensual sex.”

But not doubt the sex offender apologists on here know Harvey better than his own brother...

I don't do any other social media, but is it prevalent elsewhere that if you don't follow the consensus you are accused of being a perpetrator of the crime?

He isn’t going to federal prison, his trial & crimes were all NY state offences.

That’s worse for him - state prisons tend to be less well funded and run than federal ones. And very overcrowded. Plus he can still be prosecuted by other states if they want to stick their oar in.

I'm struggling with what the consensus is supposed to be that you're not following.

The man is a convicted rapist.

Maybe as an example, with climate change, where those who don’t follow the (scientific) consensus often chose not to as their lifestyle exacerbates the problem and they don’t want to change.

Where does your approach to rape sit with this then?

Which bit of consensus don’t you follow?

Why do you think it’s relevant to his sentencing that he wasn’t found guilty for all the offences he was accused of?

Something tells me the Aryan Brotherhood won’t be very welcoming to a Jewish person.
Or maybe they will?! Every day is a school day on PH.

On this occasion that 23 years is appropriate.

Disagree with that and you are accused of supporting rapists. Is that really the quality of debate that is expected now?

How is it not supporting rapists to challenge the severity of their punishment? You wouldn’t be supporting them if you wanted a longer sentence would you.

Would you have given him more?

Rape's a vile crime. Harsh sentences (if this can even be considered that) should be par for the course.

I'd have harsh sentences for any physical violence against another.

I wouldn't say it's supporting rapists but I do think he's a strange choice of person to go to bat for.

How long is appropriate taking into account that the US don't tend to mess around with sentences?

I tend to think of Weinstein's sentence a little like some that you hear of in the UK where you know that if they were tried for everything you'd need a courtroom running 24x7 so they take what they can.

Hopefully some consolation for all of the victims.
