Erm, yes, it is abuse. You shouldn't be forced into having sexual encounters with someone in order to get a job, no matter how "good" the job is afterwards.
Rape and assault aside, I think it depends. Is a $10,000 a night hooker being abused? Is an actress that fvcks the right people for a $100m career?
Slightly different scenarios:

Prostitutes are not forced to sell themselves (not the high end ones you mention - the issue of those with drug issue is a debate elsehwere)

But "I won't give you this job unless you have sex with me" is abuse. Because it also probably comes with "If you don't have sex with me, I am powerful enough to end your career right now because I know everyone in Hollywood and nobody will ever hire you again"

Stories seem to be two ways. Those who were boxed into a corner and assaulted, and then those who made the move willingly/proactively to get a part, or to steal a part that was lined up for another.

Fair point sure. Six of that, half a dozen of "I'm going to have sex with you because you're powerful enough to start my career right now"... I don't know LA but I know NYC and the half dozen are ever present even in the considerably less glamorous or sexy world of finance.

I see the "It's all the victims' fault" brigade have re-emerged.

Which half do you think are the victims of abuse making the allegations?

Along with the "roll eyes" brigade.

They obviously crawl out every time such a story makes the news.

What are the odds that other showbiz connected abusers are suffering from twitchy bum syndrome? Domino effect or will the rich and powerful just carry on as usual?

Neither, I thought we were talking about trading sex for favours. As I said several times 'allegations of rape and assault aside'; I assumed most people would be on the same page regarding allegations of physical assault. Now what do you imagine is more prevalent in the industry? Rape and assault or actors and actresses having sex with directors, producers and other actors and actresses to land parts?

edited to make sense

No. And you're smart enough to know that's not what's being said.
I hope you can see why there's a secondary dimension to this too...

Nope. No secondary dimension. Regardless of who technically made the first move in any particular instance, the fact that there is a culture where it is accepted that you should, or even can, give sexual favours in return for advancement is wrong. Full stop. The fact that even here we are trying to normalise the fact gives me chills. Surely you can see that it is a very short step from 'she slept with me' to 'you have to sleep with me too'.

I could see no one was running this story on PH, unsusual, even given that those may not be interested..

It seems he was (and still is) a fat producer that power got to head, and all (not some) attractive women were fair game to his eyes.

Unlike some, I did know who he was, as in name-to-face, having watched many of his produced films. It's an obvious case of getting too big for your bridges and the rather insular life that seems to be Hollywood.

Can't see how the company will survive. He seems to have been a magnet to the stars and a series of boycotts could end it all..

I assume by firing him his company has already worked out the best chance they have to get through this...

I assumed that this was how Hollywood has always worked.

Or did Weinstein invent the 'casting couch' all by himself?

He better hope so, or the Qatari owners will be doing their best to sue him.

I too always thought this was regular Hollywood behaviour.

It could also be possible that Hollywood treated it as an open secret if this 45 second clip from Team America (2004) is anything to go by - https://youtu.be/2ZwtNAHy7z0

I also assumed it was well known this is how Tara Reid used to get work (allegedly)

Also Denise Richards, ex Heidi Fleiss escort girl.. wonder how she got her roles? (Allegedly)

Curious, there seems to be a theme developing here. It goes like this "that's how it's always been therefore it's fine and I'm sure everyone is having a good time."

Truly deranged and thankfully a mindset that is being left behind.
