The hard men of London just sit there and film it.

wkers - all of them wkers.
I take your point, but he did not physically threaten the woman - so I imagine people were afraid of being arrested for assault if they made the first move. The bloke in the doorway did make a point of standing between them.

Would be interesting to hear from one of our BiB whether it would have been legal to use force to restrain this dude.
A decision to use force is a very personal and subjective thing i.e. what you may perceive as a threat and danger may be different from what I do.

Objectively, there'd be ample room for justification to use force on this guy given his behaviour to protect the lady he was abusing.

Bit more info for anyone interested: http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/s_to_u/self_defence/

It's nothing to do with being afraid of being prosecuted for assault. It's people unused to physical confrontation not wanting to get involved.

not a bib but i think if you could demonstrate a genuine fear of physical harm you can preempt an attack

and i mean physical harm to yourself or others

She seemed to be quite capable of shouting back at him. And that's all it was, shouting.

There always have been, and always will be dheads, but what I find incredible is that none of the blokes stood around stepped forward and told this prick to calm down before he got a smack in the mouth.

The target of his vitriol is show more bks than the rest of her metrosexual co-commuters put together. Some of them even seem to think that it is a bit of a laugh. Although she stood up for herself pretty well, I can imagine that she was pretty unnerved by the whole situation and was hoping that someone would come to her aid.

Fair fks to the chap who did put himself between the pair of them. You can't always judge a book by its cover, but he didn't look the type to relish the situation, yet he did his best to help

Plus when the lady moved they stood their ground in front of her.
In that situation when someone is that irrational god knows what they could do....only thing I would have done is asked the lady to stop interacting with him.

If the woman had any common sense, she would have retreated down the carriage and shut up, when you are confronted with such a massive cock as that bloke you don't keep prodding, no matter how you feel you have a right to do so. You have no idea what is going on inside the mind of a bloke like that, arguing with him could be the last thing you do in life.

If I was one of the blokes I would have done what they did, try not to get involved with this guy, do what the guy standing near did in trying to clam him down at most, but if I saw any physical harm that was about to happen, I would do what most on that train would and deal with him in the least damaging way.

You don't get any points for being a hard man in a situation like that, far too many unknowns, you only act when you have to.

It's easy to say that now but in that situation you have no idea if the guy has a knife or weapon, how far he will take it, if anyone else will help you. And countless news stories have put people off intervening as it seems that often the police will arrest the wrong person with no common sense shown. People do not have intimate knowledge of the law about self defense etc. If someone stepped up and tried to shut the guy up and it ended with shouting man getting a smack in the mouth or worse, would you bet money on the intervening Samaritan escaping a criminal record, punishment, prison? I wouldn't, and wouldn't risk my career and ability to provide for my family, to stop someone getting shouted at.

Yes, providing they've done it to protect themselves / someone else.

The guy obviously has some serious mental issues. You aren't dealing with a 'normal' person there that's for sure.

That’s fair enough but, apart from the one Good Samaritan, nobody even try’s to calm the situation. If a few of those people stood around filming it on their phones stepped forward a made it clear to him that this behaviour just isn’t on then shouty man may well have felt outnumbered and backed/ calmed down.

To not get involved because you don’t think you can physically deal with such a situation is understandable. To stand there filming it on your phone whilst giggling about it makes you almost as much of a as shouty man.

Filming it is one of the best possible ways to ensure that if it escalates to the point that a crime is committed, that justice will be done with the full context and situation being accurately review-able by the authorities, a jury etc. If you don't want ot get involved, watching and filming is the next most helpful thing you can do. I also wonder if once the Ronnie Pickering things become well known and camera phones are totally ubiquitous whether people will behave less tt-like for risk of going viral?

I seem to remember some reporter going mad like that in an interview but can't for the life of me remember exactly what it was.
