Bang on

It's the modern equivalent of ringing 999 from a phone box with a hoax call
It's genuinely scary how ste like that can get hold of folk. You could tell just by the description of the abductor what it was supposed to achieve.
If its added what some are reckoning is 2 hours plus waits for people that's a lot of kids that will have going to bed a bit later than the parents had planned.
And for some its first day back at school today too

There are an awful lot of people for whom it doesn't matter in the slightest that this was 100% false.

The fact is was posted on social media is enough for it to be real.

By the time it's been told by one to another, to their friend to their shopkeeper and to the person at the school gates it has become true to them.

The old "We all know it happens, I read it on facebook"

Only gonna get worse.

I was watching a popular Facebook thread unfold last night about this where they kept posting this very thread, and jesus wept it is depressing to see the level of stupid on display, whether it be the "THIS IS AN OUTRAGE XXXX HOPE SHES FOUND XXXX" mumsnet slapper posts, the veiled racist crap against "Asians", the idiots posting stuff like "I CANT SLEEP UNTIL SHES FOUND IM SO CHOKED UP HUN XX" or people just mindlessly posting the letter F to follow the post, because they are too stupid to realise you can just turn notifications on, so you have to wade through 500 posts of just the letter F.

Soylent Green. The only solution.

This sort of nonsense is one of the many reasons I closed my Facebook account. The number of times a friend or family member would share crap like this and you end up offending them by telling them it's made up to get a reaction (the subtext being that only someone of limited intellectual accoutrements would fall for it).

The internet is going to destroy society at this rate.

Instant lies - followed by instant outrage.
This.

Once the concept of "truth" and "fact" fails, as it looks very much like it is, society will fail because it is predicated upon the basic assumption that people are honest most if not all the time.

Trump and his ilk are showing us a future where anything can be said, no-one is accountable, and the very notion of "the truth" is irrelevant.

It is incredible to think that it might not be a plague or asteroid that destroys our civilisation in the end, but lies and a complete breakdown in trust.

I fear you are correct.

Once trust is lost, civil society is lost.

I'm surprised the thread is still on here to be blunt.

Idiots have always existed...it's just that now they document it (Facebook posts). Local community groups are the best if you want a laugh.

Personally I think the strong rebuttals are more important to preserve.

Perhaps locking and new topic of social media hysteria might be an appropriate way to discuss.

Social Media gives everyone a megaphone that can be heard across the entire planet.

Unfortunately it gives them absolutely no training how to use it responsibly, and there aren't any repercussions anyhow.

The Russians are already showing us just how dangerous this is, and how it can be weaponised.

!!!!!! Anyone live near heaton Park please share little white girl age 6 or 7 with pink coat and my little pony wellies has been abducted from her parents by an Asian male and put into a car as everyone was leaving the park ... please share! Park is on lockdown every car is being searched ??!!!!!

Yes, yes, it is a facebook post but it is genuine so please keep an eye out wherever you are but especially around Manchester ..
Very odd language to use if it was real - "little white girl", "asian male" - but no information at all on the car.

Of course, the people it was designed to anger (not by you, OP) will likely never see/care about the correction. It'll just "justify" and reinforce their existing prejudices moving forward.

A lot of truth in this.

A few years back a guy i know shared something (to do with soldiers not being allowed to do something in a certain place to prevent the risk of offending a local group of Muslims I think). Basically it made the particular accused business look bad, and painted Muslims as a whole in a bad light (as if there were not enough legit stories doing the same). Of course there was the usual outrage and righteous indignation.

Although it wasn't completely unbelievable, it seemed fishy, so after a minute or so clicking around in the internet, I found many sources pretty much proving it to be fake, and not a single bit of evidence supporting the claim. I thought I'd share my findings, and was met with mild hostility. He didn't take the post down, as he said, in his own words "well true or false, I still don't agree with it". He shared it to a few more groups afterwards.

Ridiculous.

Seeing much the same thing with the Tramadol trafficking woman. Despite multiple aspects of her story being dubious and exposed as false, many people simple refuse to accept the facts and continue to propagate the falsehoods. We saw the exact same patterns with the 'kidnapped' model a few weeks ago.

Social media make the old saying "A lie is halfway around the world before truth can get its boots on" look like a quaint understatement. The mainstream media plays along with it to get eyeballs, page views. It really boils my blood.

I also thought the 6 or 7 years old bit was odd. Do you not know how old your child is?
