Cards, stationery & gifts company puts an ad in the Mail.

Some people complained (yep how dare someone advertise in a national newspaper) and the following grovelling apology was issued. hehe

I guess they've had a think and wondered whether DM readers make up a greater or lesser share of their customer base than the type of people who complained. The free market will decide whether they've done the right or wrong thing.

Can we have a ban on posters linking to Daily Mail "non-stories"?

Nothing new there Lego did exactly the same thing.

We theoretically have a free press. But newspapers that refuse to follow the agreed line will have their funding cut by withdrawal of such commercial tie ups.

The Mail is free to follow any 'line' it wants to. It has chosen one that does very well for it.

Conversely, limited companies are free to advertise where they choose to.

We do have a free press.

It's nothing to do with an "agreed line" it's simply that some brands will decide they don't want their name associated with other brands.

Pretty much spot on. If you don't like an ad or the newspaper that carries it - ignore it.

How did the complainer know that Paperchase were advertising in the DM? I don't even look at the front page of newspapers I'm not interested in.

Sorry but I think I missed something.

What was the complaint about?

Is it just me, but I can't see what the fuss is about? £4.75 for 2 rolls of wrapping paper seems steep, but as it's free who cares? If there's a catch then fair enough, like a minimum spend but that's to be expected.

What am I missing?

Complaining to a business about in which national rag they advertise is the epitome of sad, isn't it?

Well, except for posting in a thread about it.

hehe

Somehow, I have ended up on the mailing list for a company that sells advertising space in newspapers, and get emails from people trying to sell me banner adverts for my company for "only" £795 a week, which, after a blistering response, was reduced to only £595 for the last few slots!

One of these newspapers offered to me was indeed the Daily Mail, but a couple of days later, the follow up email was

"Hi Alex,

Response has been good to our most recent email, but we understand that some companies would rather face bankruptcy than advertise their services, so we have a few other suggestions that might be more suitable below..."

It isn't a link to a Daily Mail story (the post does not actually link to any news article). You the subject of the post when you saw the title; like the paper itself, you are free to simply not read it.

I see. They make it their business to look at a newspaper they despise. Taking one for the team, I suppose.

Think you've completely missed the point of the post there.
