They are correct in one regard - there currently isn't an example. As Dave has pointed out, that doesn't mean one isn't achievable.

Where they are incorrect is in the statement that the success of brexit is contingent on the outcome of the Irish border. Nonsense.

I agree with your first point.

But can you unpack the second point? It’s a requirement of all the Brexit scenarios under consideration, isn’t it?

If you read back on davepoth's posts, there are at least some within Whitehall that are defining an approach that means goods are handled effectively under bonded conditions by Approved Economic Operators - meaning that to achieve the processing of any potential tariffs, or the required level of customs inspections the whole of NI becomes a bonded warehouse.

Technically, it is feasible - indeed there are currently goods being imported under similar methods in the UK. The difficulty is one of scale and system. Both of those can be overcome, especially with the will to agree an appropriate implementation period (which could be separate to the overall transition phase, again, as long as there is willing).

It will be interesting to see how long it takes for someone to send this thread to the negotiating teams and all the problems get solved.

Hopefully the remainers won't be able to stop the leavers from sending this thread. wink

Just watching Davis/Barnier press conference, all seeming much more cordial on both sides now.

Was probably the next thing on Merkel’s list once she got her coalition sorted out...she did just have a “what next for the EU” chat with Macron, after all.

Perhaps they finally realised they can’t do what they want with us in the EU, so smoothing our exit is a good plan for all?

The NI border issue is still not resolved though, "No UK PM can agree to that" appears to have u-turned so the wording will be examned closely by media.

Seems only fair, the transition has to work both ways. After Dec 2020 it's for the UK to control.
