I am pretty sure that must be a bit of attempted trolling but, if not, seek help.

What on earth are you talking about? Refunds are nothing more than a repayment of overpaid withholding (paye) taxes. All other things being equal, if your refund is smaller it's because you've paid less tax through the year! Come on, I thought Trump supporters were supposed to be the dumb ones!

I think you may be failing to understand the situation, fairly dramatically.

Another one throws his hat in the ring.

“Former Texas congressman Robert "Beto" O'Rourke has formally announced he is running for president in the 2020 election after months of speculation.
In his campaign video, the Democratic rising star said the US was facing a "defining moment of truth".
Mr O'Rourke, 46, is the 15th Democrat to declare his bid for the White House.”

An acquaintance of mine posted something that I saw on Facebook, which showed that O'Rourke was really popular in the metropolitan areas of Texas (probably expected) but also, a real strip of Blue right across the Mexico border, compared to an overwhelmingly Red state (Blue= Democrat Red= Republican)

My acquaintance, a Britsh born chap who lives in the US and would suck the cock of Trump if he could, believed this was clear evidence of voter fraud/illegal voters being allowed into Texas polls, as all the illegals live directly in the border towns, or just walked to the nearest voting station to Mexico and chucked in a vote. Despite "his" guy winning.

A lot of American states are like this, including California and Oregon which are Blue in the cities and Red in the sticks.

Strictly based on my personal experience with Texans is that there are two types of Texans. The modern urbane kind that tend to occupy the cities and make them hubs of business and technology (Austin is like a cheaper Silicon Valley) and the backwards redneck kind who glorify guns and hate wetbacks and there isn't much middle ground. They are prime examples of the American ethos of either being very, very good or very, very bad. Some Texans have been the nicest and most good humoured people I've ever met... then again other Texans have been the biggest raging aholes I've ever met.

I think Beto is somewhat of a DINO (Democrat In Name Only) which means he appeals to the moderates of both parties who just want a stable economy and embarrassment free leader. I think a lot of republicans will be happy voting for a DINO, to be honest, the moderate republicans will be happy voting for a house cat over Trump, the house cat's arse licking policies at least make sense.

And as soon as the democrats realise this, and manage to quieten down people like AOC, they'll have it in the bag and everyone will breathe a sigh of relief.

If they drop a bk and nominate Bernie, then they've a good chance of losing again.

I highly doubt they'll nominate Bernie... he's too "left" for most Democrats but AOC is actually bringing in a lot of votes for them by making the Republicans look regressive although she'll never be nominated (especially not with the the DNC's super delegate system).

I think they've wisened up a bit since the Hillary debacle and the Democrat race is between Beto O'Rourke and John Delaney. If I were to put a fiver on it, I'd say O'Rourke.

Plus she's too young for the nomination in both 2020 and 2024, by 2028 there will have been at least 4 years of "Not Trump" and she might not seem as fresh and feisty as she does today.

The one name that'd be great would be John Kaisch.

I've listened to a couple of interviews of Pete Buttigieg; surname with non-obvious pronunciation aside he's got some interesting views on things which may get him more traction than I first thought when he appeared on the Late Show. I doubt he'll win the nomination but I think he could be a surprise outsider.

OK,

I realise that you don't do "taxes" here in the UK so you don't expect a yearly refund. They do in the US. Australia did the same thing. Every August I submitted a tax return with deductions, usually got a few hundred dollars back.

The thing is that people expect a certain amount of refund each year from tax, that figure has dropped significantly due to tax increases Donald Trump put in during the 2016/17 FY. This change gave people a larger refund in 16/17 but increased the amount of tax they pay in subsequent years. So many Americans are now looking at a lower refund... some are even looking at a tax bill (yes, if you haven't paid enough tax, you will be sent a bill for the remainder).

Also a lot of Americans don't like doing PAYE. They're much more suspicious of their government.

Interesting... but I think the fact he's openly gay in a very conservative and religious country would make it very difficult to be elected.

However on the name front, does anyone remember John Boehner? I believe they went to lengths to avoid pronouncing it as "boner" on TV.

Dear god. I paid US taxes for years; the refund is nothing more than a refund of overpaid tax! We've been over this. Read the thread. It tells you nothing at all about the tax rate, only the difference between your with holding rate and your tax liability. Literally every major US news outlet on the left and right has covered why refunds have fallen (on average from $2100ish to $1900) and it's because the vast majority of people are paying a lower with holding rate; ie the government is overcharging them less the rest of the year! https://www.newsweek.com/tax-refund-2019-irs-trump...

It should be obvious to anyone that those who don't pay with holding/PAYE will not get a refund but a bill. So what?
