Aren't little chef going to be gone soon? I'm sure I read somewhere that it's planned all their sites will be closed and replaced with something else
Yes, all remaining 60-70 Little Chef restaurants in the UK will be closed by 2018 and replaced with Greggs or Starbucks franchises.

Travelers are still happy to eat junk food, but only if it is dirt-cheap, or on squishy sofas that make them feel all posh and stuff.
its a shame really because i think the kind of people who want to go starbucks or costa are a little behind the times of more modern people who are over that and now getting back into traditional things like a decent fry up.

I used to love Little Chefs. I went in one a few years ago now, and I remember walking out and thinking "bloody hell, that was 30 quid for garbage" and I've never been to another one since.

WH Smith can't have much more time, but I've said that since Woolworths went biggrin
Don't know how they keep going, always seem emptyish and I don't think I've ever bought anything in one.
They always used to make their real money out of distribution/wholesale. The retail business is only part of the story
The distribution/wholesale side was demerged in 2006. Now known as Connect Group plc.

WH Smith is just the travel and high street stores now.

on a related note I'm a little concerned about arcadia group that own Topman, Topshop, burton, evans, dorothy perkins. They closed down all those stores at my local retail park (galleons reach, beckton). Having said that the topman/topshop on oxford street is THE place to go.

I doubt they'll fail altogether just yet as I expect Food keeps them nicely afloat, but I'm going to nominate the clothing side of M&S is well overdue a serious store rationalisation, unless they get a grip on their dismal in-store stock situation.

Toys R Us is teetering.

I changed to Smyths just before Xmas for Vouchers due to concern they may go under.
My local toys r us has announced its closure after 20 odd years. Don't know how many times I've taken the kids in to spend gift vouchers and they've struggled to use them. Smyths have just opened a new store nearby which is always bunged and the kids could spend hours in it spoilt for choice yet it all looks to be similar stuff?

I propose we rename this thread "Random retail chains we think we will close despite the fact they may well be thriving, but I visited at Christmas and don't like them so they are doomed"

I was in Next today. The only bit that was thriving was Starbucks. The car park was nearly full but that was because there was no space in either Tesco or M&S.

I hope Maplins doesn't go.

I west to Argos twice in the run up to Xmas and it was quite packed both times. There were queues at the pick up point for already ordered stuff.

My washing machine broke on Xmas eve. I looked at it on Weds and discovered the motor was duff. The dial was sticking as well. Repair: £250 for the motor, fitted, and the switch 'I could get you a second hand one otherwise there might be a wait'. 33 months old! Two year guarantee!

Went online to Curry's Weds afternoon, ordered one in the sales (massive choice) and it was delivered and fitted by 0930 Thursday. Cheaper than the repair cost, and that's with 32 programmes with two different subroutines that can be used. So 96 variations on the assumption that one can't switch both subroutines at the same time. Utterly pointless. There's a 30 minute wash that takes 25 minutes.

Why bother with high streets for big stuff?

I was quite impressed by the service from Currys. I used a local place for the one that went bang as, my reasoning went, if something goes wrong I could go round there. The cost was about 10% more, a bit of an investment I thought. The place has since closed, the extra year's guarantee worthless.

Bensons for beds, whenever there’s 2 big names, one always goes under.

Think of comet vs Pcworld and allied carpets vs carpet right.

Who goes to bensons instead of just going to dreams?

What’s the USP of either? If I think bed shop, it’s dreams.

Homebase.

Four quid for bag of screws when I can get 3 x the amount for two quid at Screwfix.

Big (very big) Homebase near me just closed.

Always found Homebase expensive.

This thread is in danger of turning into the ramblings of four drunk blokes in the pub at 10:45 on a Sunday night

I prefer Mattressman.co.uk

The warehouse bed shops aren't even close to competitive! But people equate "expensive" with "amazing" laugh

In terms of stores that I wonder about

Waterstones never seem to have many customers. I tend to buy books from Amazon!
H&M or Burtons/Top Shop are generally empty. Ditto River Island (Zara seems to have snaffled custom from them)

Maplins is a good bet I reckon. I think all I've ever bought in there was an HDMI cable or something like that and I never notice it being busy in there.

There were some murmurings around Maplin before Christmas. Always struck me as a strange hotch potch of a shop
