I like EAT and the city centre outlets I go to are often busy, but on last visit I noticed my meal of choice, the crayfish noodle thingy, seemed to have gone up in price and was in a smaller container, so I walked back out.

Also, the 2 outlets that I used consistently at Glasgow Airport and Heathrow T5 closed (T5 might have reopened since, not sure) which kills a lot of brand profile amongst Joe Public

Sadtimes if there is any truth in this. Agreed though that Hornby sets are eye wateringly expensive.

Just to add anyone know how Games Workshop are getting on?.
Airfix are doing OK at the moment. If Hornby fails it won't be because of Airfix.

Hornby, They removed stock from stores to prevent under selling... and the latest offerings are either too complex or too expensive rumours are they are selling off the Scalextric brand but i cant remember where i heard it (forums most likely) and i cant remember the last time airfix were popular.
Is there any substance to scalextric sell off (source) as a resurrection is long overdue.

Funnily enough I'm "oop north" at the moment and went into a large ish Maplins on a BUSY trading estate. The estate has a Currys a Pets at Home / Dunelm Mill/ TK Maxx/ Poundland/ Staples and an Aldi. Just across the car park is a large Morrisons. Its what would be called good footfall.
Completely empty of customers inside. uninspiring displays full of a mix of tat and genuinely good stuff. There was a really good offer on some routers £100 off some top of the range stuff.
Then there was the reduced section full of the tat that was left over from xmas Totally stuffed full of remote control cars and other mass market stuff that you can get way cheaper.
Place is fked
Yep. They have just opened a brand new store near me to replace the existing one which is being redeveloped. On the upside they have taken less space, but it is in a poor location.

They seem to survive on people needing components and small items at really short notice, but Amazon are closing in on that market with same day delivery. The bigger ticket items are almost always cheaper elsewhere.
I was in that very store at the weekend, I needed two CR2032 batteries and a couple of 32GB USB drives. The store is very nice, brand new but as Kingston12 says, in a poor location on the very edge of town. I think there were 5 members of staff standing around, there were definitely more staff than customers.

Two own brand CR2032 batteries were £5.99, I ended up getting them from eBay for £1.25 delivered. 32 GB Sandisk USB drives were £30 each, ended up getting them from Currys around the corner for £10.99 each (exactly the same drive)

Usual overpriced computer hardware, home CC TV cameras and obviously a section for all those DJs out there.

Is it not obvious to the management what the problem is, it was obvious to me this was coming ages ago.

Will they somehow pay the £15 million VAT bill to keep the company ticking over in the hope of finding a buyer, or will the tax office give them time to pay to keep 3200 in jobs?

Not been to a Toys R us in years, but from the photos they look exactly the same as when I used to go there to buy games for my Sega Master System back in the late 80s.

I get the same feeling about Toys R us as I did about Woolworths. Times moved on, yet they stayed firmly in the past.

They could incur penalties and interest until a buyer is found or HMRC seeks a winding up order - which I'm not sure they would want to do. Not paying the VAT/not putting it into an insolvency process might leave the directors exposed though.

15 years ago Maplin was great, good value for PC stuff, electronics bits and tools for the inner geek and largely good value.

PC stuff is now crazy money, and Chinese tat that really isn't cheap at all.

Rolson tools still have a little interest, but I can get them delivered for the same money online without having to deal with car park dinks and a 20 minute queue out of the mall.

Popped in to collect something last year (cheapest around, amazingly) and:

Related: are Toymaster still going? I remember picking up Hornby rolling stock for less than the RRP (£4.50 for a 4-wheel truck / £17.00 for a BR Mk1 Composite coach etc) in 2004-ish - still got the price stickers on the box (faded).

Haven't seen a Modelzone store for a fair while - presume they've gone under?

Toymaster is a franchise operation - essentially independent store owners sign up to the franchise. So there seem to be quite a few around.

Modelzone did indeed go under. The brand was bought by W H Smith who intended to open a model section in some of their stores. They did have a go but it looks like they decided it wasn't working for them and they won't be pursuing this idea. The name may be up for grabs again soon but I think the idea of model shops in town centre malls is dead.

it was one of the Various Model railway forums sadly i cant remember which one. Pulling all their stock (Hornby Scalextric and Airfix) from stores to prevent them selling it below RRP Before christmas certainly wasnt a good move

Just looked on their website and their own brand 1.5m HDMI cable is £19.99. I was in poundland at the weekend and there were selling Philips ones for a pound (surprisingly enough)

Might be time to pickup those DJ lights you have been eyeing up every time you have been in there or an eBay quality home CCTV system.....

Could even build a gaming PC with 2 year out of date components, the possibilities are endless.
