Looks like we can add Claires Accessories to the list :

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5483595/Cl...

Seems that if your company sells over priced tat or reheated food from Brake Brothers then your company is probably is big trouble.
No, read the article, they are in trouble for exactly the same reasons as ToysRUs - it's not that they sell tat, there are plenty of girls and their mums wanting to buy that tat and pay handsomely for it. Just like ToysRUs it is the debt repayments from previous buyouts and ill-planned expansion that are crippling Claires.

Time and time again it's the same, something reasonably successful comes up for sale (founder wants to retire, or venture capitalists feel the time is right to offload, whatever), the business is sold to a different set of private equity / venture capitalists who then pile the debt from the acquisition back into the formerly successful business. I guess they hope to sell it on again to another set of VC but eventually the cost of servicing the debt absolutely dwarfs any profit they were making on the tat, to the point that just selling more tat or indeed selling better quality stuff just cannot make any difference to the debt.

Sure there is usually a rent bill or a HMRC vat payment or something like that that breaks the camel's back and gets the public blame, but it's always ludicrous amounts of takeover debt that the company was carrying that they fundamentally cannot service.

Hof really isn’t a shock, the one in Cardiff has been left behind since the new st David’s was built, the flagship store is a new John Lewis which sells everything that theHOF does except in a nicer environment and closer to the other shops

The hof has a fish tank in the store and it stinks out the whole place

Homebase have 100 days to sort themselves out or they will disappear.

The Australian company who bought them have realised they have messed up the place. They've now pulled out and given the 100 day turnaround deadline.

Homebase is going back to what it was, but time will tell if it can be saved.

Edit to add - has this already been covered on here?

Homebase has been discussed, but I think this is news to the thread.

Reading Homebase closing in 2 days, sold and being replaced with flats.
https://www.inyourarea.co.uk/news/huge-stock-clear...

Cardiff closed and taken over by another chain http://www.diyweek.net/the-range-to-take-over-home...

So looks like those they can get rid of easily/worst ones? are getting shut.

All I can find is a story about one of the credit insurers pulling out

https://www.hortweek.com/homebase-bunnings-credit-...

In Australia Bunnings is the De Facto DIY chain and it appeals to both trade and DIY customers. One thing I definitely noticed when I lived there is the distinct lack of competition chains over there have. Need some Paint go to Bunnings, need a Supermarket you have a choice of Woolworths or Coles.

I think Bunnings underestimated the competition here in the UK and thought they could just turn up and it would be the same as Australia. On a weekend Bunnings tend to have a suasage sizzle (BBQ sausage in a piece of bread) and that is literally all they have to do for people to turn up.

Over here we have umpteen choices, B&Q for your average DIY'er, Wickes for building materials or Screwfix etc. if you need that pipe fixing at very short notice.

Bunnings came here thinking it would be easy to establish themselves, failed badly and are going to pull out and go home.

Add Homebase to the list!

yes

They have described it as a big mistake trying to change Homebase.

Apparently, lots of of senior staff were made redundant when they took over. They have now got rid of a lot of the Australia related staff. Native Australia staff have gone home and they are bailing.

seems a few chains may go this year.

The market is saturated though, the last few years a new restaurant opening in Cardiff every few weeks being reported by the local paper.

Frankie and Benny's, All bar one, TGI Fridays, Chiquita, Garfunkel's, Harvester, Beefeater etc. all selling the same reheated food from Brake Brothers.

You know Frankie and Benny's are in trouble when there is a 50% off voucher on their website. Ate there last week in London and even with 50% off it was overpriced rubbish.

All of these "gourmet, £15 for a burger" places must be in trouble. Ate in 5 guys a few weeks ago, overhyped and over priced will not be going back.

Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe surely they are finding it hard. Personally not prepared to pay their prices just because they have some fake movie/rock memorabilia nailed to the walls.

Even my local curry house is a joke, two cokes, 6 poppadoms, two curries with rice and the cost was £51. This was £30 a couple of years ago, again won't be going back.

I think all of these chains have been serving rubbish food for too much money for too long and people have had enough,

If a restaurant chain offers a regular voucher for a limited period (which changes constantly) that just tells me you're paying over the odds. Case in point, Vintage Inns, were good, have grown and gotten worse along with getting in on the voucher/discount deals.

Quite agree. People are getting wise to rip off Burger, Pasta and Chicken 'restaurants'. High time a good many gave up.
At least Wetherspoons and McD etc don't claim to be anything they're not.
