What a sad loss of life frown

Since there is no 20 page thread on PH about it, I presume it's not Islamist terrorism related?
Don't count your chickens...
Sorry to disappoint you, but NBC are reporting it was a white male. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/shooting-repo...

So what happened to all the people that carry weapons to defend themselves.
Surely someone could have pulled one of their guns out and stopped him?
Because that's why they all carry weapons right?

Very sad news but just seems to be an all too regular event. I was in Thousand Oaks a few weeks ago and have family living less than 3 miles from where it occurred.
This is like the PH comedy thread where you learn someone died just by a black humour joke. I came on here to see what Donald had done since yesterday and got this. Still no idea what it is about, but let me hazard a guess.

4 people shot at workplace shooting and ex employed gunman kills himself.

Slightly O/T

There was a TV programme on BBC2 about people who voted for Trump (featuring Ed "Balls" Balls)

On the programme was a black gay firearms instructor who voted for Trump. His instructions to students if they ever encountered a shooter was to "Run. Run away very fast. Because the Police are on their way and when they get there and see you waving a gun around they are going to shoot YOU. They won't know you're one of the "good guys". It made a lot of sense and completely contrary to the "Stand and shoot back" school of thought..

I was way off the mark, pardon the pun.

Should have been clever and said " White male with grudge causes active incident causing between 5 and 50 deaths"

More guns, more deaths.

And it will only get worse with one part of America hating the other half.

Glad I live in jolly old Blighty where statistics are far better at keeping us safe than packing heat.

Very good point. The problem with "armed people would have stopped this scenario" is that the shooter has the surprise factor always and then the confusion / panic factor afterwards because his /her victims are not acting like someone going into enemy territory expecting the worst on point duty, they are just living their normal lives.

Far better to reduce the chance of having to fire back in the first place>? .scratchchin

America can not make that John Wayne to statistics jump though. Not yet.

Whilst I am spamming the thread, it would be interesting to compare the number of police officers killed on duty in the EU by firearms since 2000 compared to the number killed in the USA in the same period given the EU has similar population but more more strict gun laws as a whole.

MIght be a tricky stat to get.

Probably thought they were going to the pub to get drunk and didn’t see the need for taking firearms (rightly imo).

That, and CCW and open carry laws are very prohibitive in California...if you ever see someone strapped in public in greater LA you're either looking at a law enforcement officer, or you wandered into a neighbourhood you really shouldn't have (thousand oaks isn't that sort of area, by a long chalk).

It is illegal to carry a firearm in a bar/drinking establishment.

Yep Cali is right at the bottom when it comes to CCW.

<100k CCW holders. Florida has close to 1 million.

CCW is issued by the local Sheriff who makes a decision on a case by case basis and that particular county can make the rules up as they go along. For example some counties only issue to people they consider "at risk" so for example doctors who visit remote areas. In those areas wanting a CCW just because you want one is not allowed.

Other counties will issue to anyone. The funny thing is once you have a CCW issued its valid in all of California!

Anyway, back on point, CCW is not permitted in a bar in California so it would have made no difference.

This is why some bars / nightclubs and famous people employ serving or retired (they keep their exemptions on retirement) law enforcement as they are the only people who can carry a firearm in any place at any time.

Agreed. How does good guy 2 who comes charging in a la Trump to take out the bad guy, know that good guy 1 (who has already opened fire on the bad guy) is actually a good guy? You could end up with dozens of supposed good guys shooting at each other

Even those with concealed carry licences are not allowed to take them into bars and nightclubs. Obviously this is the problem, if everyone who went to a bar to get st faced was allowed to take their guns with them this sort of event wouldn’t happen.
