How do the people who keep a gun in a bedside table expect that to go? If I wake up in the night it takes me a few seconds to realise what's happening another few seconds to find my glasses/phone/light/gun etc.
You wake up and have an armed invader standing over sleepyhead you and they are probably wired, it's not going to go well in most cases.
Or it's one of the kids.

Just feeling like there are more ways for it to go wrong than right.
If they are leaning over your bed you are probably stuffed. But, if you hear a noise downstairs then you probably have the time to sort yourself out. In USA they have courses for weapon handling but I doubt many people do them. I have a mate out there and he is very well trained and practices a lot, I wouldn’t like my chances breaking in there.
Just me & Mrs HD in the house.

I come awake instantly but if you make it past my 2 dogs, I have this Police issue Mossberg by the bed.

Don't really need to aim it

I have also twice, accidently, left my garage doors open all night on 2 occasions. Power tools, Aston Martin, bikes etc.. all on display. Nobody touched anything. Having said that I live in a fairly crime free area and I'm sure if I was in downtown Indy my garage would have been empty in the morning.
You can buy control panels that automatically close the door after a period of time. I had mine connected to the wifi so if I was away from home I could check it was closed, and close it. In the end, I pulled the internet part as unused and just have the garage door automatically close after 10 minutes.

Peace of mind.

Liftmaster 888LM.
Yeah, the MyQ stuff is good. Link up to IFTTT and do the geo-fencing stuff. There are others though and a little bit of effort and its all good. Mine is set to tell me if the door is open and I am away from home.
Cheers for that - many times the MILs garage door has been left open over night, and was looking at some home-brew solutions to notify her if it was left open more than 5 mins.

This is what a couple of friends who are into their guns recommended - a decent and reliable shotgun with a suitable shell (depends on house, construction, type of wild animal that you have etc). Best bet and one that you arent going to shoot someone in the neighbors apartment / house / next county.

Still surprised to see people talk about their AR-15 semi-auto for 'self-defence'. Really? You like playing dress-up or do you really live in the projects? And I know you can get different caliber ones, but you get my point - a quick search on Google revealed that some gun-nuts consider the 5.56/.223 round as 'insufficient' and you can get the AR-10 thats chambered to take a .308! Bloody hell, didnt realize that there are elephants in North America!!!

No, I don't but it takes longer than 10 minutes to cut it! What if I'm happily mowing away and the garage doors all close and lock me out?
1. Use the external keypad entry. Every house here has one.
2. Before exiting, press the hold open button.
2a. It's been a while, but I think that you can use the Internet gateway to set a custom open time to whatever you like.

If you're arguing with someone that that doesn't have a stake in the outcome, you might as well be wrestling with a pig.
Whether or not someone has a stake in the outcome of a discussion had zero bearing on whether or not they are correct, or their arguments are logical. You just want to shut down discussion that's not going your way.

We used to get group text messages from colleagues telling us of new gang initiations. E.g. if someone flashes their lights at you at night and you flash back, they pull you over and shoot you as an initiation task. The week after we left there was an incident at the T junction from our subdivision: a car drove up to the side of a couple, wound their windows down and shot them both. Was chalked up to a gang initiation. And its not like we were in a bad area, we were in Sienna Plantation in Missouri City, just outside of Houston. Sienna had its own security force that would turn up very rapidly at your house if the alarm went off, and they were armed. I accidentally set mine off and it was like the local SWAT got the call.
Oh come on now. That’s such an obvious and worn out urban legend. What other scaremongering cobblers did you and your “living in fear” Texan neighbors believe? It’s probably quite the list! laugh

Statistics are pretty clear - having a gun in the home significantly raises the risk of someone in the household being shot.
Yeah, I always figure that if I have a gun in the house one day the wife will use it on me. hehe
Was chatting with a colleague from Atlanta the other week (he lives north of the city near Kennesaw). They homeschool their children, partly because of concerns about school safety and also the quality of teaching.
If his children ask to stay over at one of their friends, he always has a conversation with the parents about firearms, especially about safe storage.
If they're not locked away, then the kids aren't allowed to stay there - he's not prepared to put them at increased risk of injury.

So you don't know the difference.

Also you've made up a lot of stuff on this thread. I don't have a narrative... I use facts and they don't match your bks.
Well you suggested I made some information up which was clearly reported so that makes you a liar. You don't have any credibility and if you don't like the way things are done here, you can always vote to change the way things are unless you're not a citizen. In which case, everything you say is irrelevant
No, you did make information up and I'm not just talking about that article (which also does not say what you think it does). You have continually made up information on this thread. Not just that one example, but dozens.

You are a bullstter and are upset about being called on it.

You've repeatedly made the assertion that Texas is a safe place... Safer than London. I've provided facts that demonstrate that assertion to be false.

By my maths, Texas taken as a whole is is a little over 6x more unsafe than London when it comes to intentional homicide rates.

I worked with a bloke from Texas last year. He walked with a limp, and I asked why. He was out hunting with his drunk friends, and one of them took a pot shot at him, hitting him in the knee. This rather took him by surprise, and his reaction was to shoot himself in the foot, losing a big toe in the process. Never a dull day.

Classic combo of alcohol and firearms !

I was at a bonfire do, one of the parents from my kids school, nice people but a little rough, but with lots of money.

Anyway, they put a good do on but the weather wasnt playing, persistent drizzle, made the garden a quagmire and people were slipping and sliding all over the place, partially the conditions and partially the sheer amount of booze they had laid on. Another effect was that a few fireworks failed to light.

The owners brother was there and he suggested they got their Shotguns to shoot the failed fireworks, now these werent a few from a little Standard box, they were Costco sort of 100 plus shot things, I doubt they would light but you never know. So you would have two very drunk blokes with lethal weapons, explosives on a slippy surface in the dark. If one did go off, cant imagine what a powerful, badly damaged, multi shot firework would do if it did light upon being shot, but I cant image it would be great for anyone watching, they can misfire when perfect.

It was at this point I suggested to my wife that the evening was over and we should round the kids off and make haste, she had clocked the situation and completely agreed.

They didnt manage to get their guns as the owners wife told him not to be an idiot and that cracking out the arsenal when you have guests and have gone through a crate of beers each is poor form.

Same bloke proudly showed me his new RR Sport, and told me that he had sent it in for some mods to the infotainment, not least the ability to watch TV when driving, so dont think his judgement was the best.

CNN have the video statement from former Uvalde school police chief Pete Arredondo that he gave to investigators day after the massacre which includes his saying he thought "There's probably going to be some deceased in there, but we don't need any more from out here"

He had decided the gunman was a barricaded subject which left all the students and teachers in Classrooms 111 and 112 for dead.

Illinois leading the way with sensible gun laws. Gov. Pritzker just signed an assault weapons ban into law, effective immediately. It’s not going to fix things overnight, but it’s a very big step in the right direction, and will definitely make things better, especially long term. And that’s what matters. Of course the usual clowns are vowing to fight it, bleating about it being unconstitutional, that it only affects the law abiding so what’s the point, and other such rhetoric.

Illinois Gov. Pritzker signs Assault Weapons ban into law

  • With the governor's signature, the law takes effect immediately. It bans the sale of assault weapons and high capacity magazines, along with rapid fire devices. The Senate bill did modify the bill the House first passed on what high-capacity magazines would be banned. For long guns, it would be for those with more than 10 rounds. For handguns, it would be those with more than 15 rounds. Those who currently own any of the items being banned, who will be grandfathered in, will have to report [register with police] the model, caliber and serial numbers of the weapons they own by Oct. 1.
