Illinois leading the way with sensible gun laws. Gov. Pritzker just signed an assault weapons ban into law, effective immediately. It’s not going to fix things overnight, but it’s a very big step in the right direction, and will definitely make things better, especially long term. And that’s what matters. Of course the usual clowns are vowing to fight it, bleating about it being unconstitutional, that it only affects the law abiding so what’s the point, and other such rhetoric.

Illinois Gov. Pritzker signs Assault Weapons ban into law

  • With the governor's signature, the law takes effect immediately. It bans the sale of assault weapons and high capacity magazines, along with rapid fire devices. The Senate bill did modify the bill the House first passed on what high-capacity magazines would be banned. For long guns, it would be for those with more than 10 rounds. For handguns, it would be those with more than 15 rounds. Those who currently own any of the items being banned, who will be grandfathered in, will have to report [register with police] the model, caliber and serial numbers of the weapons they own by Oct. 1.
Step in the right direction, but no chance of this having any impact on the thousands of people shot each year in Chicago, especially with the light sentencing, auto switches on handguns and no cash bail putting dangerous people back on the streets within a matter of hours. It feels like Chicago is getting more lawless every day...

The 6 year old who shot the teacher was under a care plan including his parents having to attend school with him, but didn't on the day he shot his teacher

The school authorities had refused to take action over teachers reports about him, including his threats that he wanted to light a teacher on fire and watch her die,

Yet he was able to get easy access to a parents gun...

Guardian: Nine dead in shooting after lunar new year festival near Los Angeles, say police

Sounds like the gunman is still on the loose.

I worked with a bloke from Texas last year. He walked with a limp, and I asked why. He was out hunting with his drunk friends, and one of them took a pot shot at him, hitting him in the knee. This rather took him by surprise, and his reaction was to shoot himself in the foot, losing a big toe in the process. Never a dull day.
There are a lot of gun related "accidents" in the US. Typically

Child finds mom/dads gun in the cupboard or drawer. Thinks it's a toy. Plays cowboys, bang bang - dead sibling.
Similar to above, out hunting, think mate is on the right, he drifts across to the left unnoticed, noise heard on the left, shoot - shot mate.
Fail to unload or clear weapon before cleaning - end up shooting self.

Suspect in some sort of bizarre stand off with the authorities being reported now; white van stopped and surrounded by police in dromerama footage. Going to be messy

Yeah I don't think Chinese in the USA going to lunar new year festivals own many guns, much less take them to Lunar New Year Festivals. If it happened at a redneck festival in Buttcrack Creek, Texas, the outcome could possibly have been different.

Killed himself

At 1 p.m., a SWAT team determined that the suspect had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities determined the man inside the van was Tran, the mass shooting suspect.

This seems a little more odd than the usual nut with a gun.

The killer was a 72 year old Asian man and those killed were at a dancehall, also older Asian men and women.

How sad. Go out to celebrate and end up dead or badly injured.

I have to admit that I didn't even bother clicking on or listening to the news story at first when I heard 'LA', 'Park' and 'Party' as I just thought it'd be the usual gang bangers.

Hmm, someone will probably be along to call you racist, but it is true that Black Americans are ten times more likely to die as a victim of gun violence than White Americans so its a fair assumption based on the location and previous incidences.

But, it seems very unusual to hear of someone Asian (Chinese etc, rather than the UK use of Asian) being involved,

It's being reported that the gunman used to be dancing coach at the studio he first attacked, and had a history of aggressive behaviour towards his students at the time. I do wonder that, given his age, if some form of dementia was involved, the gradual loss of inhibition leading to him finally acting on long-held resentments.

CNN are updating their article with fresh data from the Gun Violence Archive... it's 39 now. So that's 1.625 mass shootings a day in 2023, and with the Gun Violence Archive classifying a "mass shooting" as 4 or more fatalities (excluding the gunman) we're talking a minimum of 156 fatalities, but it's probably more than that since the Lunar New Year one was, what, 11?
