As a family we're looking at getting a few of the more collectable new SS Rolex watches to wear and enjoy and also to pass onto kids/grandkids etc as a reasonable longer term investment (ie not to flip). I've got an initial watch lined up with a local AD (36mm datejust for a lady) to show our willing and over the next few months/years would like to build a relationship with them and get hold of the following:

No date Sub
43mm SeaDweller Anniversary model
SS Daytona Whiteface
Batman GMT (or maybe a Pepsi or whatever other colour they may come up with in SS.. Baselworld will be interesting)
possibly a Milgauss

Other than the Sub are the leadtimes hideous on all the above (the AD is rather vague on this!)? I guess it's worth us asking to be waitlisted for all of them to be on the safe side? Are there any other new models you'd say are particularly collectable? Outside of Rolex I'm considering adding a Speedy of some sort to the list and possibly the new Heuer Autavia and Monza reissues.

Milgauss should be available from stock pretty much anywhere. No date sub a matter of weeks, GMT BLNR a couple of months.

So within say three months you should be able to knock off a fair chunk of your list. The Sea Dweller and Daytona will be a little more tricky but I suspect none 2017 models will be easier to get for the SD-it’s not the Anniversary year and if I was buying for investment I’d want that.

If you’ve bought all of those you may go up the list for a Daytona. All depends on your chosen AD.

However if you need to go grey market for only one watch on your list it’s not a bad deal is it?

Or you could start buying at a few different ADs and try and work your way through the list.

Personally I’d speak to the manager and buy the DJ36 and Milgauss at the same time and insist on leaving a £5k deposit for the next available Daytona. Once you’ve got that the others will be much easier...

Many thanks for that.. really helpful advice. I'm not 100% sold on the current Milgauss (and can't decide on colour) so we may look to get the Sub and Datejust initially if the Milgauss is more readily available (and get on the list for the Daytona/SeaDweller). Interesting about the BLNR GMT, I thought it might be harder to get hold of than that. I like the look of it but would love to see a modern SS pepsi or even a root beer. The AD has a pre-owned steel/gold GMT in at a reasonable price but I'm not convinced on the looks of that for me anyway.. would look nice on a lady though imho.

I think 2 months for a BLNR is very ambitious especially with no prior purchases (albeit with one lined up). I had 2 purchases with my AD (2 tone sub and a 2 tone date just) and got a BLNR within about 6 months of my first purchase, which for me is very quick. With 3 purchases now I'm 3rd on their proper list for a Daytona (beware that all ADs have never-never lists that they put people on).

I have a great relationship with my AD, I always pop it for a chat which can't hurt. At the end of the day they want to see what kind of person you are (i.e. you're not going to flip on every watch they sell you).

Just my two cents but I'm speaking from experience.

The Milgauss will be easy to get - perhaps buy one of the white face orange hands one if you can find one as they are now discontinued.
If you shop around both within the UK and within Europe then you should be able to find the No Date Sub and Batman GMT within a couple of months. You might have to pay slightly more if you buy from Europe and obviously shopping around will not lead to you building up a relationship withe one AD to allow you to get the more difficult pieces which are the 43mm Sea Dweller and the SS Daytona Whiteface. The Sea Dweller will be easier than the Daytona to get. If you want to buy from one AD through a long term relationship then it will take longer as you will have to wait for the allocation that the AD has. Going to ADs outside London and other major conurbations will help as will going to ADs that only put people on their lists who have bought from them before.
In terms of Speedy or Heuer watches - they do not have the same market appeal as the limited supply Rolex models. Omega is always releasing new Ltd Editions of the Speedy and the Heuer reissues are in the same vain.

Thanks chaps, I do travel in Europe a fair bit so the other thing to do will be to keep my eyes out at airports / local AD's I guess.

I'd agree with the advice to get an AD in a smaller town that isn't Goldsmiths/WOS.

These guys are easier to build a relationship with; it's easier to have a chat with and get to know the manager, who will probably have been there for a long time and (i don't know this for sure) be solely responsible for the allocation of the watches.

I'd just be up front. Make sure they know why you're buying and present the list and ask what you need to do to get it fulfilled.

So am I, just under three months from first enquiry to getting a BLNR a couple of months ago with an AD I had no "relationship" with. Was offered a second in December but I was too slow making the call back as extremely busy at work.

Was offered a YMII at 10% off brand new and a Sky Dweller SS "very quickly".

Apologies didn't mean anything by it. Why would they offer you a second if you bought one anyway?

I think my AD is similar in regard to phonecalls, if you miss it that's it.

I was told from AD in Aberdeen 2 years wait for a no date sub. If anyone knows a better place to try I'd appreciate it.

It will be interesting to see how you get on. I personally think you wont get any of the desirable ones within 6 months. And the Daytona within 2 years

Happy to be wrong tho!

I've heard rumours that a new Milgauss is being launched at Baselworld, but it's possible that's just speculation. The Air King, which was launched in 2016, is basically a Milgauss with a redial, and I can't see them discontinuing that so soon.

Bound to be right enough as I've just acquired a blue dialled GV.... whenever I jump in with stuff, it usually goes immediately into obsolescence!

It's a keeper 'though wink

thats usually a good thing on rolex's though! the SD4000 appreciated about something like 40% in the months after they discontinued it.

on the flip side, there are always rumours of what might be coming, or get discontinued at basel world. most of them wrong! Im looking forward to a ceramic explorer 2, but I might wont hold my breath smile

or maybe a SS GT coke/pepsi....

Last time I was in Barcelona (March last year) the Rolex AD near Catalunya metro had SS subs. explorers and a BLNR GMT in the window.

My son got one from Robinsons in Manchester with an 8 week wait. 20% deposit to his secure place.

He's still on the list at Mapin and Webb 6 months after putting his name on it. He did this at the same time as putting his deposit down at Robinsons

Robinsons have currently closed the list for the Sub Date but said 6 months when it does open

After making the decision to finally purchase a Sub I've spent the last two days calling at least 15 ADs only to be told there's waiting lists for sub no date, sub date and green sub (hulk).

I've put my name down at most of the ADs I called for all three models but I actually really want the 116610LV.

How hard can it be to buy a watch?
I've looked at all the usual grey routes but their prices are ridiculous for the green subs vs RRP.

Surely it would be better if Rolex just issued a statement about stock...if that's the issue.

In putting your name down on a watch that you may not actually want you’re adding to the waiting list problems. I’d stick to what you really want and either wait or pay premium.

I had an email from Goldsmiths Manchester today to say there’s 50 people on their waiting list for the Sub Date and they expect that to take 18 months to fill so at present they’re refusing to add any more. That’s less than 3 pieces per month that they’re receiving!! And that’s for Goldsmiths.

id like a hulk too. I reckon however you've got absolutely no chance in any reasonable amount of time - possibly never if you believe these lists are actually bobbins.

i nearly bought one 2 months ago. was 7.2k but wasnt perfect. There were ones available for 7k BNIB at the time. Anyhow, I didnt bother and thought id leave it until after xmas. Now they are 8-9k!!!! crazy.
