I'm no engineer but I think the top would be best
Could you build a Möbius strip bridge?

Could we not build a bridge which passes over France into Spain?
hehe as long as it's to Southern Spain.

Anyway, back to the subject, I seem to remember the initial idea 'was' to build a bridge, not a tunnel chunnell?

Get the Chinese in to build it. They completed their Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in 4 years (longest in the world at just over 26 miles I think).
It would take us 4 years of blabla before we even got started!

Daily Mail readers are not happy. Are they ever?
I'm particularly amused by the posters identifying themselves as being in Dublin and Perth having strong opinions...

A second road or rail tunnel by the 2050s is quite likely.

A bridge will never happen. Too many ships, waves and gusty winds.

Why amused?

Surely an external view would be valuable.

That’s easy.

For UK bound traffic in France - they get in the left hand lane before getting on the bridge.

For France bound traffic in the UK - they get in the right hand lane before getting on the bridge.

wink

Yep.

By making sure he tops up the public perception of 'Boris is a moron' every so often, people don't look to closely at what he is up to.

I agree with Yipper. The cost of tunnelling has reduced massively over the years and a road link would be far more beneficial than yet more trains.

I don't think Boris Island would be such a bad idea if Boris was the Prime Minister.

It's certainly true that Boris Island would not be the worst thing about a BoJo premiership.

The location might need revisiting if the plan is exile, though.

London and around needs more airports, if the rest of country also needs more airports the solution is to build more not pretend building a big one in the middle will fix the problem. What is it with the UK? We constantly spend as much as possible to fix as small of an issue as possible. We build roads we know won't hold the capacity in a few years often straddled by bridges that then cost a fortune to widen the next time we add a lane, which only then serves to need to be widened again. Go to other countrys... EU,UAE,USA. find a flyover that wasn't build on the assumption you might need to double the road width at some point in the future. It's pretty pathetic really.
Stansted is 20 Million passenger journeys a year below capacity at present (without another runway), per its CEO .

What is needed is a larger hub airport not airports randomly scattered throughout the south east.
