To clarify my post earlier, I don't think there is any real military threat from Russia at present. It is just worth nothing their military strength is superior to ours

But, there is a clear and present danger from Russia right now regarding cyber warfare and media disinformation.

Lastly, it should be remembered that Putin is a nothing but a criminal dictator, and there is nothing whatsoever to admire about his regime.

I'm sure ordinary Russians are extremely pleasant people who are as disgusted by his antics as much as anyone, but it disturbs me greatly that some people seem to look up to Putin as though he is a good example of anything.

They already are threatening us - and are certainly on the offensive in all sorts of areas. Cyber, undersea, in the geographical peripheries, and good-old espionage and subversion.

How much one regards this as a threat depends very much on political views and levels of cynicism or indifference, but I'd argue it's very much there. It isn't the only threat of course, but it is real. Probably not existential - although who knows with some of the personalities involved - but undoubtedly significant.

PH omertà rules. Could never divulge that sort of information.

On the other hand, if you see any nasty looking Spetsnaz types hanging round - all shaved heads, huge beards, hunting knives and tattoos - then I think I saw FunkyColdRibena and Yipper pissing in one of Putin's Jimmy Choos.

There is no alleged about it.

Have you ever sat and watched 'Russia Today'?

Your certainty is slightly puzzling unless you're extraordinarily well informed. In any case, playing with undersea cables wasn't what I was referring to. The undersea adversarial relationship is 'hotter' now than even at the height of the Cold war. This st is real. It really is.

Private life scandal bubbling up, tries to deflect attention with mad 'Russians are coming to kill us all' headline.

There is a lot of tinfoil hat stuff being spouted in this thread.

Mostly along the lines of people claiming that the Russian threat is simply a made up distraction.

Russia isn't a specific threat to the UK and never really has been but it is a threat to all its former satellite states. Everyone from The Ukraine, the Baltic States, Poland and beyond are all countries Russia would like to bring back into it's sphere of influence and if we get too much in the way of that then they would be a threat.

It's activities in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine are all about seeing how far they can go before they get some real resistance from the EU and NATO and so far we've perhaps shown ourselves to be a bit of a pushover. An early poster suggested the US getting involved in Eastern Ukraine is a bad thing or maybe it's just a subtle message to Putin that in fact we won't just rollover.

Of course what it boils down to is all these places are now in NATO so we are obliged to go their defence but ask yourself, are you really prepared to risk another major European land war to defend Latvia?

Question: How many countries in the world are flying n*clear b*mbers within ~30 miles of Aberdeen and actively baiting the RAF with aggressive flight patterns that require emergency scrambles?

Answer: 1.

Question: : How many countries in the world are aggressively sending their submarines fitted with cable-snappers within metres of UK Atlantic Internet cables?

Answer: 1.

Question: : How many countries in the world are (heavily) rumoured to be sending mini-subs up the Clyde to inspect UK n*clear activities?

Answer: 1.

Question: : How many countries in the world are chugging their warships within ~15 miles of Dover and actively baiting the Royal Navy with aggressive sailing patterns that require emergency scrambles?

Answer: 1.

Which country?

Russia.

And the huge threat, longterm, is when China and Russia partner up as joint military powers. Will probably begin in the 2030s, when China's military starts to catch America.

For now, Russia is just being passive-aggressive. But you cannot ignore a China-Russia megapower.

If you still think Russia is benign. Just take a trip to Ukraine or Georgia. The Russians blasted everyone to f*ck so they could get access to a few sea ports. And it happened only a few months and years ago.

I'm in no doubt Putin is up to no good and playing a long game.
We live in "interesting" times indeed.

Brexit will play a big part. The EU are determined to keep prodding and pushing East if we join them we will be fked. The liberal powers in the EU are determined to stamp their mark on the world stage.

The nationalistic Russian and China superpowers will wipe the floor with anyone.
What side do you want to be on?

How do you feel about being manipulated by the media (unknowingly) using fake information supplied by Russia in order to further its political aim, or, just for Putins amusement?
I'm surprised nobody has blamed Putin for Brexit.
