Elon Musk is great.

He could have taken his Paypal fortune and lived off that for the rest of his life, instead he started companies form scratch create rocket companies (that land ffs!!), make the worlds first usable EV (that everone is trying to copy), develop underground tunnels, Hyperloops, AI companies.

Really...?
Yep I think so

Reusable orbital rockets and rocket ship ev Road cars. Both a significant impact on the modern world
Re-usable space vans only three decades after the Space Shuttle.
The only thing the Model S does differently to any other EVs was have a lot more generic cells in the battery - and better marketing hype.
As far as I know, the shuttle being able to land as it did made it extremely flawed in other areas and insanely expensive compared to normal rocket deliveries to space.

Its not comparable to landing SpaceX's first stage and the implications.
I think it's probably fair to say that if you aren't impressed by what SpaceX have done, then you don't understand what they have done.

I agree.

It's truly laughable reading negative comments from people who will leave zero mark in terms of any notable or worthwhile achievement when they move on. The whingers unite in obscurity and failure. Elon is pushing new boundaries and, succeed or fail, is giving it a damn good go and getting a lot further than anyone here!

Musk is a genius. Off the spectrum genius, but genius.
They will still be talking about him when we are all dead and buried.
Musk clearly is a visionary. The C5 was a massive success too I believe.

It will be interesting to see how long the market will keep pumping the cash, because he is in danger of the whole shebang going tits up.

It's the scientists and engineers in fields you will never hear about that will change the future, Musk is king of the bullsters who made a lot of money with a decent idea and is now using other peoples money to chase his dreams. That can only survive so long before the harsh reality of market forces change the game. He isn't the first and wont be the last to do this.

One of my relatives via my mum was Louis Pasteur, he made a fair difference. It's the fields of medicine, chemistry and medical procedures that really make a step change, what musk is doing is a bit meh and there are plenty of others who can achieve the same thing without pissing billions up the wall.

Paypal
SpaceX

Proven success. Arguably Tesla.

Musk didn't found PayPal. He founded x.com, an online bank which - only five months after being founded - merged with PayPal in March 2000. Musk was replaced as CEO in September 2000. Most of PayPal's growth came after it was bought by eBay in July 2002.

The money he used for X.com came from being one of the founders of Zip2.com in 1995 - an online cityguide which sold its services to big newspapers. Elon Musk only owned a small percentage of the company, and wasn't CEO. Compaq bought it in 1999 and rolled it into AltaVista.

He didn't found Tesla, either - it was founded in 2002, and Musk came on the board as an investor in 2004. He only took full control around 2008, when the original founders were pushed out.

Lol.

People just read a few overhyped American articles and swallow any old nonsense. They probably think Hollywood movies are real!

Musk (Tesla) has lost billions, and will lose billions more until at least the 2020s. That is not selling. It is gifting. Any old fool can give stuff away at a loss. Repeat -- losing money is known as "gifting", not selling.

What's more, Tesla is not even the biggest electric car company! The Chinese, like BYD, are much bigger.

In other words... Musk is losing vast sums of money and massively trailing the Chinese... that's not the sign of a genius thumbup

What is visionary about Tesla?

Its not a new idea, he has just managed to pursued enough people with money to back his company.

If it crashes and burns that money will be gone with it. If that happens could that money have been better utilised investing in a company that doesn't go tits up but made progress less quickly?

Investors have their choice.

He has vision, everyone else is in catch up mode. He is slightly freed from the big players in that he has minimal existing revenue at risk.

Try searching for the answer to that one on Alta Vista smile

In other news, SpaceX ran a successful test firing of all 27 engines on the Falcon Heavy this afternoon, planning to launch in the next couple of weeks.

Musk is on record as expecting a high possibility of a RUD, but for SpaceX it appears that every RUD day is a school day as well.

Everyone else is working towards producing a car that works, can be produced in massive numbers whilst generating a profit and has proper after sales support.

There is no point spending your money on a car you cant get repaired after a minor shunt because there is no parts available.
