Every living former First Lady of the United States has now publicly slammed Donald Trump in a period of less than twenty-four hours.

Laura Bush: “I live in a border state. I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.”

Michelle Obama retweeted adding “Sometimes truth transcends party.”

Hillary Clinton retweeted adding “The test of any nation is how we treat the most vulnerable among us. First Lady Laura Bush made that case eloquently.”

Rosalynn Carter has released a statement saying “The practice and policy today of removing children from their parents’ care at our border with Mexico is disgraceful and a shame to our country.”

Melania has released a statement saying: “Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform. She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart.”

This is true, but governments hide loads of stuff from the public eye. As an example, in 1979 I worked for the MoD in military US funded satellite space programs. The press release of one particular project was it was just a communications satellite, not so at all. It was actually to observe and track this thing........

Now make of this what you will...….It's a whole new and interesting subject!
Anyway, were digressing here away from lunatic Trump.
Well, almost... hehe

I hate to dip into this thread and reply, but I think what Trump’s doing has a reason behind it, and might be “smart” (in the Trump worldview!) if you completely put morals to one side. It’s now very well publicised that anyone trying to enter the USA who is caught will be locked up, and separated from their children who will also be kept in conditions that aren’t what anyone sensible would wish for their kids.

As an immigrant you may see the USA as the land of milk and honey, and believe in the idea of the American dream - anyone can make it if they’re just willing to work hard, and you and your family will have a better life there. The current start of affairs may well be changing these thoughts, making the USA a less desirable place to try to get into...

This falls down when he uses it as leverage simply to get his wall built. He has said he will stop it if he gets funding. Its blackmail using kids.

If it really was to act as a deterrent, there would be no financial conditions associated with it. Even if someone got through the wall, they would still lose their kids - thats the only scenario where it works, but Trump has not said this.

Exactly this, he repeatedly goes for the worst case, waits for the public and media backlash and then implements the middle ground (which wouldn't have been accepted initially)

What's the betting when (if) the budget for the wall is approved his view is "I don't it and saved families being cruelly split up"

Yeah we've said this previously, make it an unattractive place to come, be it south americans, muslims, etc
It doesn't make the way they are doing it right though

I have extended family who live in Southern California, and illegals have been a subject of conversation a couple of times.Initially brought up because of driving down wages in manual trades and other semi skilled/unskilled work, (it has effected their business) . This was back 18 months or so ago, and then, 70% + plus of the California prison populations were illegals, and in 2 of the other border states it was 50% or so, cannot recall which 2 of the 3 it was. With the tightening, its probaly higher now.

Relative was of the opinion that the influx needed deterring somehow, be it a wall, or however. Seems like Trumpy has chosen tightening the implementation of the immigration law, or maybe in time both options. Apparently the reason the children are split from their parents is that once intercepted the adults go to Federal prison until they can be brought in front of a judge. Children cannot be incarcerated in a Federal prison, so have to go to seperate facilities. Once the illegal is seen by a judge, they are normally , if its their first offence, reunited with their kids, then deported. Iff they are serial offenders, it can be prison, and then the same as the first instance, once sentance served. .

Democrats are the problem. They don’t care about crime and want illegal immigrants, no matter how bad they may be, to pour into and infest our Country, like MS-13. They can’t win on their terrible policies, so they view them as potential voters!

But it's all OK because Sessions said on Fox that Trump's family separation policies are not like Nazi Germany because Nazis "were keeping the Jews from leaving." by putting them in camps.

Crime in Germany is up 10% plus (officials do not want to report these crimes) since migrants were accepted. Others countries are even worse. Be smart America!

Whilst I don't agree with Trump or his policies isn't the word infest appropriate when millions of illegal immigrants from south of the border are living in the USA?

Dictionary.com describes the word Infestation as a "troublesome invasion".

It may sound harsh but it does appear to be suitable.

Of course to the native americans the White European is an infestation writ large. biggrin

So much winning, sorry whining...

Senate overwhelmingly votes 85-10 to block Trump deal to lift ban on China's ZTE telecom after national security concerns raised about cell phone manufacturer

The 10 who voted for trump were: Gillibrand, Harris, Feinstein, Lee, Markey, Merkley, Paul, Sanders, Warren, and Wyden

Not an expert in American politics and law but my understanding is laws need to be passed by Congress/House of representatives before passing into Senate for a final vote.

While Republicans control both by majority in Senate it's a tiny majority and in Congress it's not quite so small but is small enough that laws can be blocked due to individual Republicans voting against the party which they are of course allowed to do.

Given there are plenty of republican representatives who dislike Trump it is not hard to imagine enough of them voting with the Democrats more because of Trump than issue with any law.

As such it is not as easy to pass laws as you and others may wish to perceive it to be.

As to paying for the wall. It's not the politicians paying for it. That aside it is a bit of an ask given Trump said Mexico will pay for it however it was one of the promises he made when running that he would build the wall and he is keeping it or trying to.

Who pays for it is simply a sticking point as it's possible he will get Mexico to pay for it indirectly via taxes.
