An interesting thing I learnt today is that Trump had changed responsibility for firing drone missiles from the Pentagon (as it was under Obama) back to the CIA.
What that means is that now they are less accountable and more secret.
He has also loosened the rules of engagement to include associates of targets including family members, rather than the targets themselves.
That was because it was getting reported that the number of civilian deaths had doubled under trumps first year in charge
https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/201...

Although the exact figures are now difficult to get as they aren't being reported now

With Trump’s Muslim travel ban being upheld by the Supreme Court, let's all remember that 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, a country that is not on the Travel ban.

AP - Judge Kimba Wood on Tuesday said prosecutors investigating Cohen's business dealings will receive access to most of the raid materials later this week.

It'll be a while before anything shakes out of this I guess, but should be interesting is due course.

I'm sure there are 'internet research agency' controlled accounts on here. They were/are running a large campaign of stirring up arguments about Brexit, immigrants and politics in general on forums and social media. Pistonheads gets enough traffic to make it worth their while.
There have been accounts who sign up and troll politics discussions, then disappear after elections on PH for as long as I have been reading it, and that was when it was all fields with TVR's abandoned in them.

How much of it is part of the rather British tradition of winding up people who take it all way too seriously, how much is internal political stuff and how much has been state actors is open to debate.

Personally I think the more focussed efforts by the Russians pre-date the 2010 election, maybe as far back as 06/07, certainly I can recall "odd" posters surfacing from the financial crash in 08 and onwards.

It isn't just the traffic level here, the demographic is influential and conventionally hard to reach, and in particular the site punches well above it's weight in google rankings, multiplying up any success at poisoning public discourse.

Would be interesting to see the amount of new accounts cropping up at the time brexit referendum seemed on the cards too, as that is in Russia's interest as well.

While I've no doubt NK has continued its nuclear programme post-Singapore, it's worth noting these kind of statements are almost always based on remote intelligence these days, rather than people on the ground, so caution should be advised. All too often it seems findings are regularly reached without anyone involved actually leaving Washington, let alone speaking to people with firsthand knowledge.

I'm sure image analysis has improved a bit but the satellite photos providing definitive proof of Iraq's WMDs turned out to be nonsense, so conclusions should be treated with caution.

It seems safe to come back in as the rowdy element appear to have gone quiet - for the moment anyway.

Regarding satellite surveillance - things have moved on quite a bit since the days of the Gulf Wars. Also, satellites don't just take photos. There are all sorts of surveillance satellites - some take photos in visible light, some in other wavelengths (such as infra-red) and many are "listening" satellites, which listen in to radio transmissions and other electronic signatures generated by equipment and systems in order to try and glean what the "other side" may be up to.

Federal data shows most immigrants who enter the United States do so legally and not as trump claimed an invasion of illegal immigrants

A September 2017 Office of Immigration Statistics data brief estimated that in fiscal year 2016, the latest year for which complete data is available, there were 170,000 successful illegal border crossings occurring outside of authorized ports of entry. That's down roughly 90 percent since 2000,
https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publicatio...

and it's about one-seventh of the roughly 1.2 million immigrants who obtained lawful permanent resident status via a green card, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

And don't forget those images are from openly available commercial satellites - not restricted access military surveillance satellites.
